While driving the Disco, things couldn't be any better, when comming to a stop serious problems, it goes wacko. I will be slowing to about 3mph when problems start and when I stop the the rpm's drop out and it almost dies, picks up, almost dies all dash warnings come on, but the engine hangs on for dear life. Things can be normal if...I turn the headlights, radio and A/C off, foot of the break in park. With all of the electrics off, but radio, at a stop if I roll the windows up, the engine will almost die and the radio will shut off then the engine will pick back up and radio will come back on. If reversing and hit the break it always dies. Also all interior lights dim seriously when at a stop or with any electrics on. I am on my third alternator. What is wrong, do I need another alternator and if so should I get a high output? Sorry this was so long. Steve 95 SE7 |

You're right, it sounds like a wacky alternator. I'd go to some place like Advance and get them to test it. Things to check, is that the belt is routed right, and that the wires are snugly plugged into the alternator. Those can cause the appearance of a bad alternator, too. The stock alternator is a relatively high-output... the important thing is to get a good one. It's an easy one to rebuild: it may benefit you to find a local rebuild shop and have them take care of it instead of replacing. good luck, -L |

I have had this very same problem, I am on my third alternator, had a batery store check the voltage & the alternnator was not puting out enough at idle. Problem went away for a while, came back again, changed the batery so far ok again. I suspect some sort of ground problem. Make shur you Batery cables are all clean & tight. any input from anybody else would be greatly apriciated. Jason |

Sounds like the voltage regulator may be bad, possibly something (electrical surge?) keeps zapping it shortly after you replace your alternators. As Leslie stated a good rebuild shop should be able to help you. Not sure if this will solve things, but here are the locations of the ground points. ../17/403.html"#333333"> |

Forgot to ask, is your tach bouncing all over the place or do you hear a squelch sound from you speakers before all hell breaks loose? That's what mine was doing when the regulators (2 in 2 months) went bad, no problems since the last once was replaced 1 year ago. |

Well I went down to the local parts place and had them run the battery and alternator test. They really didnt know what results they were looking at but with three brains working as one they came up with a regulator that could be going bad. The battery is very clean and is in great shape, I have never had to replace it. I have always had engine noise through the radio and there is no noticeable squelch but some crackling when it goes off then on again. The local LR dealership had reground all of the grounds about 20 times to no avail. My tach did go crazy on my first alternator replace but now its mainly just drops out from about 500rpm then back up when the engine returns to idle. Thanks for all the input. |
