How many people have actually been stranded due to DII electrical problems?

i've never been stranded due to D2 electronics, either. i agree that being prepared with both spares and tools make trailside repairs *relatively* painless. my friend running stock alloys on their D1s and rangies still have to take of their wheels to change axles. that's really the only "big" step i have to do. i've taken apart the axles and added anti-seize to the appropriate surfaces at home to save me trouble on the trail. IMHO it's just part of being prepared.

i agree that the frailty of the D2 is partially rooted in interweb lore.

Never been stranded. on any DII specific issue. Actually, I've never been stranded, I think, on any mechanical or electrical issue with my DII. I always made it home. I drenched my MAF a few years ago, and immediatly hit the throttle when I saw that the engine didn't lock, she sputered for a while, died and then dried out, and it ran on that MAF for 3 years before I bought a new one. Even then, it still ran, it just had a sputter every now and again towards the end. I think it may have turned itself off once, and gone into limp home once. Never stranded, though. Nothing was damaged.

When I had the Optimas, if it wasn't for that fancy limp home mode, I would have been stranded several times. Those stupid things were always giving me problems in the end. Then, my alternator died recently. I made it home once, after things had shut down one by one, with 9 volts showing while the engine was running. It was a fairly long trip for no alternator. Limp home the whole way got me there, it's a smart little system.

The funny thing is, my new Orbital went from 9 back to 13.6 in 2.5 hours at 10 amps, and was like new again. Those yellow tops would never take a charge worth a damn.

The only thing that drove me crazy for years about the DII, is the exhaust location. It was too easy to rip off on a failed hill climb. I dinally just replaced the last one I ripped off with a custom bend and a cheap flowmaster. When that dies, I'll get a borla and turn it to the side at the local shop. I hear someone got a mandrel bender.:D

I've had some issues here and there, but nothing that wouldn't have happened to a DI.

Cheers,

Kennith

Who needs ABS/ETC/HDC? I don't even remember what it's like to have them...

Mine have been out for a over a year. With a stock DII ETC is a must though, IMO. No ETC + open diffs = limited off road ability.

Was once stranded heading back home. We were about 2 miles from home and she just died whilst going down the street. Rolled into a gas station, called a friend and had her hauled home on a flatbed. Ended up being a relay (under the dash I was told?). That happened at about 130k miles.

I was stranded, and would have eaten kids if I had any. Basicly got stuck in a big hole in the pouring rain. Once the rain had susbsided and my battery was getting dead from trying to use my buddies Jeep Rubicon as an anchor point (My winch just wanted to drag him towards me). I eventually got dragged out by a 3/4 Chev p/u, once on dry ground again I got a boost and found all of the lights in my cluster doing a neat show and some funny popping noises coming from the radio speakers. End story was that the BCU fried, which is keyed to the ECU, and also to the key fob. So to make a long story short I replaced all 3, dried out the beast and now I keep my Disco II away from anything wet. If I want to challenge something like that again, I will take my RRC which has never been hurt due to extreme water/mud.

Thanks to Ford for buying out LR and cost cutting the Shi? out of everything that makes a rock solid truck. Geez, even Lucas shines through!

Oh I definitely agree... stock/open d2 is not very capable.. even less so without CDL. CDL + Detroit + trutrac - ETC works great though

So... you flood your truck out and then blame the electronics. Not valid, I've seen D1's stuck from flooding also. Doesn't the government up there give you hugs when you do stupid shit like that? You' know, being a socialist government and all...

I picked option 3, but there was this one time i was off on a trail myself at around 2am. i went to start her up and everything was 100% dead with a weird noise humming from the dash. I was like "Jesus F***ing christ, not now you fat assed DII bastard!" but after a few seconds she started up like nothin happened. never happened since.

For the first time ever, tons of lights on my dash are on, but only because my axle was traumatized with barbed wire... I have never had the 3 amigos or any electrical issue ever in the past.

So what exactly are you looking for? Seems like you've already decided what your answer is and asked the question just to prove your point.

To me it seems like the fact that the computers are not waterproof as they are in some other trucks, and the fact that the BCU controls so much and can shut the whole party down is a significant problem, somewhat limited but not exclusive to the D2. You know, having your remote door locks or speedometer not functional is one thing. Having any 1 of 4 computers which are not waterproof, shut down the entire system is a bit of a problem for a "rugged off road vehicle".

So, what WOULD you allow? What possible thing would you allow and not say 'Bah, that could happen to anything." Or is this whole thing just grandstanding to reinforce your opinion?

Being stranded due to electronics, in a vehicle supposedly designed for off-road use should not even be possible.
You should be able to have it in water up to the roof line and be able to drive it once you get it out and blow the water out of the cylinders.

Me too. I'd like to see a D1 do that.
Watch some Camel Trophy videos. 300Tdi D1's did it frequently. But they had no ACE, ETC and all the other crap. There's a reason the TD5 has "limp home mode". All the electronics.
