Did anyone else get this in the mail? Thought it was another "we've been trying to reach you about your vehicle's extended warranty" deal. If it's legit then it might be a benefit if you've kept good maintenance records and had timing chain work done in the past. The reimbursement percentage is pretty weak but at least it's something. Funny thing is I was just talking to my wife the other day about selling my 2013 LR4 while it's in perfect running order, packing in the Land Rover obsession, and buying a new 4Runner. All because of the potential timing chain issues.

it's the real deal. I got one, too. the wording is really..... wordy.. but it seems like us plebs who bought low mileage trucks are eligible for a little bit of insurance should the chains go. I'm not worried, a local guy is selling his '13 right now with 230k for cheap because its throwing weird codes and he thinks its the timing chain, and its the original one.

oh, and the 4runner drives like hot garbage.

I don't know if the 2012 and 2013 are any different from previous....I didn't think so.

This class action stuff really doesn't do anything for a lot of us - look at the requirements in item #7 (second attachment page). You don't qualify after 8 years in service and/or 100,000 miles. My 2013 only has about 87K miles but it has been in service for over 8 years. If I had the chain and tensioner replacement service last year or before, then I could possibly get something back. But moving forward it's meaningless.

I'm going to drive a 4Runner, never driven one before. As I've told my wife, I'm trying to get myself to like it. I don't think I'll be successful.

Interesting - I thought the updated guides were only 2013’. Had seen this elsewhere and seems like you really don’t have anything to gain unless you’ve already doled out for new chains

Doled out for new chains at the milage listed. If it was over 100k it looks like they are doing jack shit.

I'm going to drive a 4Runner, never driven one before. As I've told my wife, I'm trying to get myself to like it. I don't think I'll be successful.
The backseat has more room than the front, and it has the typical Toyota “sitting in a bathtub” seating position. The controls are all laid out very logically and it feels well put together inside. Around town, low speeds it feels like an old Toyota. I was into it until I got it onto the highway, and learned the engine and transmission are speaking different languages and dont understand each other. I was really disappointed at that, I felt the 5.3 and 4 speed in my old Chevy gave a much better driving experience. The V8 and 6 speed in the GX460 (and 5 in the 470) are a lot better, but I didn’t like the interior of the 460 and the 470s are all pretty well used at this point.

This is the only thing I remember about driving in a 4Runner years ago (like probably 20 years ago). I couldn't stand it. My little Boxster has a more upright seating position. Fuck the 4Runner then.

If you still want to check out something with a sombrero on the grill, look at the Lexus GXs. They’re much more comparable to the Rover.

Just a stranger on the internet's $0.02, but for what a low mileage 2013 LR4 costs I cannot see anything other than facelifted L322 or Hemi Grand Cherokee competing with the LR4 as an allrounder. A tree killed my 2011 before the timing chains could take it and I love my 2013 HD. Offroad it will outperform or match anything that will fit in a parking garage. It is also one of the best driving offroader SUVs on the road. Maybe I will feel different as my 2013 ages, but I owned multiple P38s at one time and never considered ditching Rovers.

On the other hand, I have owned just about every bodystyle 4Runner except the newest refresh and have always liked them. There's a reason they're popular. I even liked the 3.0L, which people complained about. I can't imagine being unhappy with a new TRD 4Runner, but for less than half price I'll take an equally capable, much more luxurious and more powerful V8 LR4. Maybe you eventually pay the difference in maintenance if you can't do it yourself, but I couldn't imagine driving a V8 LR4 to a Toyota dealership and driving anything else back. I considered snatching up a heritage edition LC, but it was the blandest, least capable, $85K "offroad" vehicle I have ever driven.

The consensus has always been that 2013 LR4s received updated chains, but I think even the updated tensions will also fail with the 10K service intervals. When I was searching for a 2013, I saw many 200K+mi trucks for sale, with very few 2010-2012s above 120Kmi or so. I think that is telling, but it could be circumstantial. I'll believe for peace of mind.

I think it was on DiscoWeb a few years ago I read a statement that has stuck with me since:

Toyotas are for people who think that avocados are spicy.

I used a 1993 Corolla as an overlanding vehicle across South Africa and Namibia in 1998 and it took all the abuse I dished out without complaining. Also discovered the joys of the V8 turbodiesel Land Cruiser 78 series on my most trip to Botswana in 2019. That thing was impressive but unfortunately not for sale in our market.

I am not sure about what you wanted to say. But...
I have a friend who's traveling through Central America - and he's been doing that for a while now.
His Facebook feed is littered with the vehicles that... didn't quite make it. Whatever the brand. But he's the kind of a person who never knew he needed to settle on a single type of a vehicle, relatively simple in design, and not promising unattainable.

On the opposite side of things is a guy on some FB Range Rover Classic group who wants to radically redesign an RRC's suspension because it is so 1980s and not up to his snuff.
First, it's 1970s. Second, it was up to Camel Trophy and Paris-Dakar.

I hear you…..I couldn’t picture giving up my 2013 LR4 LUX/HD for a 4Runner. I’ll just be pissed if I have to do a $5-7K timing chain job on it any time before 200k miles. Hell, I only paid $4500 for a used replacement engine installed in my 2004 D2.

Maybe I’ll just dive head in and buy that front bumper, winch, and meatier tires and be in too deep to retreat. That sounds like a perfectly logical illogical plan.

Yeaup. I drove pretty much everything before I settled back into the LR4. I wanted to love a Toyota or Lexus but the modern ones are so.. blah. I had a rusted to shit T100 and I loved that truck, the 3.4 is such a great motor. I love the 3rd gen 4Runner but those are too small and too old to call them a good "safe" family DD, and I love 100 series LCs but those are crazy money for the last two models years, which are the ones to get.

The LR4 wasn't just an emotional purchase, but there isn't anything comparable for the money. Besides the GX, a loaded up WKII Grand Cherokee is close but those have little baby windows and big pillars. Plus, the Hemi has it's own sets of issues. I never drove a CRD one but that's where I would have gone if I had to pick the Jeep. They're a lot smaller inside too, even though the exterior footprint is similar. Land Rover excels at packaging.. its something that no other brand (in my experience) has come close to.

The new WL Grand Cherokee looks really nice, and so far that's the only thing that has caught my eye.. well, Besides a Rivian, as a potential replacement. But why? I don't have any nervousness about taking my truck to 200k+ miles. It's just about to roll 60k, I've put almost 15k miles on it this year. I don't mind doing the preventative maintenance, I always go overboard with that stuff on anything I've driven.

The LR4 is kind of the last of the old design. The new chassis is just an all around better truck.
I don’t really like the big goofy looking Disco5 or whatever you guys are calling it. That whole shape looks ok to me on the Disco Sport. But the big body Disco kind of looks goofy and the not centered rear license plate bracket bugs the shit out of me. But I would put up with all that to get the new chassis.

My wife admitted today that she liked driving a 95 SWB Classic more than the LR4.
But I shouldn't say anything bad of the LR4 'cause I want it to make it to Wyoming and back.
