From Superwinch Tiger Shark 9500 page..

"Warning: Synthetic rope cannot be used on this off-road winch. Synthetic rope can only be used on winches with steel drums designed specifically to withstand the rigorous forces created-by synthetic rope; for example the Superwinch Terra Series, the Danny O'Day S4000, the S4000SR or the Talon Series. In addtion, the heat generated by the brake which is located inside the Tiger Shark drum exceeds the heat limitations of Dyneema synthetic rope. Many of our competitors will sell you a winch with a similar brake in drum setup with aftermarket synthetic rope and will not warn you of the damage which may occur to the winch, rope, vehicle or injury to the winch operator."

The only way the drum will create heat is under braking. So unless you are winching yourself down a hill then it shouldn't be an issue. I have spoke to numerous people that don't see any issue running a rope on it. Like they said, "Many of our competitors will sell you a winch with a similar brake in drum setup with aftermarket synthetic rope." Sounds like legal ass covering if something were to go wrong to me.

How does a synthetic rope create rigorous forces?

The steel wire acts as a heat sink, while the synthetic traps even more heat plus the slight give in the cable along with a greater "surface area" the cable has over the drum while synthetic will collapse the drum.

it came OEM on a 00 range rover vitesse (great divide then LR equinox school) truck.

has a slightly different solonoid cover, plus had a different clutch release knob to clear the winch mount. remove plug was also seperate. i believe it also had a LRR or STC number on it but that has long since gone, and i broke the knob with a crecent wrench trying to get it unsiezed....
crapy pic but this is what it looked like...

Thanks! Here's what I have on mine, with the same clutch lever as yours.

You didn't answer my question. How does a synthetic rope create rigorous forces?

The winch motor creates force, but how does a rope create force?

It is lazy writing by Superwinch.

I use a china shit box 12k pounder on the RTE bumper. Works great, no issues. I did switch to a good synthetic line however as I didn't trust the china cable and hook. The hook more so than the cable.... Anyway.

Not the fastest but works great and was about $400 to the door. Powerful enough it has cracked the POS welds on the RTE bumper. :(

Which Chinese shit box? You'll have to be more specific, LOL.

I'm still fairly well set on the Superwinch Tiger Shark 9500. $350 shipped from Amazon. I'll upgrade to synthetic line sooner or later.

I put synthetic line on my tigershark 9500 (cost almost as much as the winch) after one use the line melted onto the drum. These winches can't accept synthetic line. However, I still think it is a good value.

When I bought the winch the disclaimer about synthetic winch line was not on the superwinch web site. It has since been added.

I had a Superwinch EPi 9 on my old DI and it worked great, my DII came with a Superwinch X-9 that had been dunked and left sitting after $200 in parts and about 4 hours of cleaning it was working well again. But I don't think I would buy another X-9, I would buy another EP series winch though too bad they discontinued that line.

I just bought a new Superwinch TS 9500, so that one is TBD but for $349 shipped I could not beat it. Hopefully it will hold up half as well as my EPi did.

What to buy really depends on how often you plan to use it. If it's a working winch and you use it weekly I would spend the $$ and get a high quality one. If you're like me and you might use it 1-2 times a year then I think most entry level winches would work. I've had good luck with SW so I'm sticking with them. If I used my winch more I would have gotten one of the better SW models.

Good to know! Site says the same thing about the LP8500 but I know poeple that have run synthetic on that one with no issues.

A cheap winch works great until it doesn't...

When I was in high school I had a Mile Marker 12k lb winch and had it replaced twice under warranty. I later sold it and bought a Superwinch EPi 9.0 which I still have, and it has never let me down.

I have seen some lines where the first 10 feet or so that wraps on the drum is covered in some sheath canvas or something.

Southeast Overlands ropes come with 10' of drum sheathing. I'm sure Steve could put extra on it.

I've got about a 50' roll of that stuff. Master Pull sells it cheap by the foot. Or at least they used to. Seems their prices have been jacked up recently since the company got some traction.

I don't use my winch that often, 3 times a year maybe. But when you need it, you NEED it. Usually it's in deep snow of mud where the truck can't really help the winch along too much.
