K-rover, here in St. Louis, Mo area labor from LR dealer is $185 hr, MINI $165. Some of the best independents in Belleville, Il $160. Smaller shops with limited vehicle services $65-$100.

My 96 D1 would have random times of hard starting. Was the fuel pump. Might borrow or get a new pressure gauge unless you get no squirt of fuel from the Schrader valve on fuel line.

I would check the taped connections and the burnt wire. See how far the wire has melted then replace. Then a fuel pressure test, check filter next to right rear frame and go from there.

Pertronix has a help line and usually quick in response. Had a problem with fire up and wound up being wrong wires.

Follow the breather hose that comes out of the rear end, usually near the middle on top. Follow up to a height of about 28-36" inches up. Usually a black plastic line with a 90-180 degree bend in the end.
