Use RTV in the notches of the block @ front & back. Then use a layer of copper coat gasket spray on the block-side of the pan gasket.
It's listed in the online workshop manual p. 12-2-47, #4 of reassembly procedure

spend a $1000 on a top end rebuild and then what? 1-yr-old water pump has a foot in the grave. then the pulleys are whining, replacing everything else on the engine getting to the bottom of that problem. then the brake fluid...

confirmed leaking seals of the brake fluid reservoir. Refilled and brakes still function properly. very few vendors supplying a "grommet/seals Only" kit. Appreciate the tip, would hate to replace a perfectly good brake master cyl.

Old thread but I'm searching info for power steering pump faulting out, PS flush & refill, PS whining.
I did a top-end rebuild for a head gasket replace which took about 4-weeks. When I finally got it reassembled the water pump was going bad, the PS pump was singing like a bird and the brake...
Are you sure it is now assembled properly? I hate to think the rocker assemblies or rotating assembly was starved of oil. Did you ever remove the front cover? You should be inspecting the pump gear and housing/race for wear & scoring after the low/no oil pressure before moving on to the other...
that is my philosophy on auto repairs as well. This D2 made me more of a mechanic than I ever wanted to be.

I know this post is old but FWIW to others searching this topic, I had this same problem. Instead of leaving the nuts torqued down to 20 or 30 ft/lb so that the knuckle would still have rotation, I ordered in a different, good/used steering knuckle and was able to torque the nuts to spec on it...
