My D11 ran fine on the interstate on the way to Northern Minnesota last week but on had intermitted stiff steering at lower speeds and with only turning. No wine or leaks.
6 hr. drive on the way home ,no problems.
My guess would be a power steering pump on the way out, unless you guys convince me otherwise. thanks.

I just went through the same thing. It was nearly impossible to turn the wheel from a stop. Check your PS reservoir and see if it is churning while the motor is running. If not, you likely have a bad pump. In my case the shaft had nearly an inch of play and I never had a whine.

Do you have any belt chirp issues? The pulley on those usually backs out of the pump a couple mm, a lot of times after doing a HG job for some reason. I'd also drain the reservoir and make sure the bottom of it isn't full of metal shavings.

Did you replace your pump with a GM pump?

I have seen them spit the shaft clean out of the pump. I've seen the flange come off the shaft. I've seen them whine and whine and whine and keep working. I've seen them leak like a sieve until they seize and the belt burns up.

Sadly, they are made by Dana and I expect better from them.

I have AllMakes brand umps almost always in stock.

Are you referring to loss of steering when the shaft came out of the pump? Because when my steering box failed I was pulling into a parking space the steering was tight then pop no control. This was on my old 98 DI

If the shaft comes out of the pump you will lose power steering because the pump will no longer be turning. That's not a big deal since the truck will probably start overheating shortly after without the water pump turning.

Old thread but I'm searching info for power steering pump faulting out, PS flush & refill, PS whining.

I did a top-end rebuild for a head gasket replace which took about 4-weeks. When I finally got it reassembled the water pump was going bad, the PS pump was singing like a bird and the brake master cylinder seals went out.

You sure you put all the P/Steering bolts in the correct holes? A couple are shorter and a long one in a short hole will fuck up your pump.
