03 vs 04 4.6

If you were to buy a late production 03 DII well outside the vin range for the bad oil pump isn't it essentially the exact same motor in the 04? Just curious because of the bad rap 03's get for slipped sleeves relative to the 04.

130k on my 03 inside the bad production range, funny I have seen more 04's go bad then 03's....just an observation on the various forums...

I don't know why people assume the 04s are somehow safer. They're all equally shitty.

That said, my 03 has been fine since I bought it with 50k on it. Now at 104.

10 years on, there shouldn't be any 'time bombs' left out there.

We didn't get the 4.6 in the UK, so were spared the timing case problems.

Just a total used car salesman plug.... I have an 04 for sale for half book value. just saying.

Either one is a crap-shoot really. The 4.6's do seem to be more trouble than the earlier motors. But I truly believe *most of it comes down to maintainence. Keep the fluids fresh and topped up and typically they live a long time.

But the most important thing of all after good maintenance and regular fluid changes is a 180 degree thermostat. Keeping them 10-15 degrees cooler than the standard 'stat is a good thing on these!

The adhesive is made by the same company that makes the stock blinker fluid and muffler bearings for Land Rover - and we ALL know how failure prone those parts are.

One way to solve it all is to use cross drilled and slotted brake lines. Makes the problems to away completely... Right over the cliff.

I does not matter if you are in the VIN range. I've seen '99s with bad oil pumps.

BTW-the Freelander engines had the glued in liners, not the Discos.
