I haven't compared between my 2000 and 04 but te 2000 uses a Bosch alternator which is rated 130 amps.
If it isn't a direct replacement I bet all you would need to do is swap the alternator mount.
May not be available in your area, but I have a industrial shop near me that re-builds starters/alternators/generators, etc... Usually runs me about 100.00 for a complete re-build. Might be worth looking into.

That's what it lasted, around 1 year. I have random voltage drop, I guess it's the voltage regulator but it's an intermitent failure, kinda of strange. I'm gonna drop this thing tomorrow and check. May be time for a new unit
Original fitment was ERR6413, Bosch 150A up to VIN 3A239591.
Superceded by YLE500090, also 150A, from VIN 3A239592, mixed suppliers.
Mounting bracket is ERR7278 for all alternators.
We don't come across Valeo that much, they were formed out of SEV-Marchal, Cibié-Paris-Rhône and Ducellier. There is a lot of material on Rovers that comes from them, things like the BCU, keyfobs and alarm system etc.
It's cheaper to buy the part number in that link for a new Bosch alternator at rockauto.com than it is for a Bosch branded rebuild of the valeo alternator.
