i have the 06 Jetta tdi and we wish we had got the 05 . its a little smaller and more nimble and better looking. so yeah go for it - the diesel is really fun.

I will give you one very important pieces of advice from my time working auto parts. With any VW tdi motor you haft to be very careful with parts, for example there are like 4 diff head gaskets which are not interchangeable based on a number of little factors dependant on when your car was built during the year. So the issue is: buy one you know has been treated well and has no problems with it. Having said that, I have a friend with an 05 converted to run on fry oil and it works like a charm (he gets free oil from the local KFC). I also know a couple of guys with tdi’s from other years; they seam to be a good car as long as you don’t beat them into the ground.

check out tdiclub.com for a wealth of info.

i drive a '04 jetta 5-speed tdi. perfect commuter. oil changes every 10K. Fill-up at 700 miles after "venting" the tank. 48mpg if I don't pay attention. 52 if I do.

I have a 03 that is a fantastic car. Not a lick of trouble. 45 MPG, reliable,parts are cheap...Etc.

Be aware that VW requires serious oil for the thing. I get some shipped from Bardhal which meets VWs spec. And, swap the timing belt at 90. Fuel/Air filters every 20,000 and you are good to go.

I worked with a guy whose family had three of them. Between the three, they had almost a million miles (they all commuted to Fort Wayne from Marion, IN).

Other than expensive fluids (the ATF is stupid $ and requires the coolest IV bottle), they all loved them. Use VW oil filters.

Damned engines never seemed to break for this guy's family, but I knew others who've never been able to get the CEL off.

Welcome back Chris! Some of us missed you!
