We have a 97 D1 with about 145k miles (odometer was wonky for a couple of years so we're unsure of actual). Running great. Even with a mild lift, bigger tires, and no front air dam, I'm still getting 12~15MPG. ABS long dead, but that's a different story for a different day. :)

Out of the blue on Wednesday, it wouldn't start. Drove my son to physical therapy. Inside with him for about an hour and when we came out, it turned over strong, but no ignition. Didn't have tools to pull the plug on site to check for spark. Then, after sitting for about 30 minutes (and a threat to all AAA) it fired up and it drove normally.

At home after it had sat for a while, I discovered the coolant was low. Reservoir not empty, but low. It was a warmish day, but the truck temp gage was in the regular range. Certainly no where near over heating.

Battery strong and it turned over smartly. I could hear the fuel pump whining away.

A check with the gage at the rail gave me the following readings with the truck cold:

Key to accessories (pump on): 35psi
Idle: 31psi
Under load it would jump to about 33psi and settle to about 28psi and back up into the low/mid 30's at RPM.
Engine off and back to accessories: 28psi

I turned the engine off, bled the gage, and tried again.

Exact same results. Initially at 35psi and then the other readings as above.

I think I've ruled out a fuel pump. From my records, for a 4.0, my fuel system seems OK even with everything original.

Any idea on the hard start? CkPS? Sounds like something overheated and had to reset, but it drove fine all day yesterday with similar conditions while I ran errands. This one I can't pinpoint.

Good luck, mine did that a few times over a period of over a year, was never able to identify the problem, then it finally stopped starting, and then it all went to crap from there.

If it's a '97, it's not a 3.9. If it's a 3.9, it's not a '97 and it doesn't have a CkPS.

What year is it? What engine does it have?

Age/condition of ignition components?

When you have it home, attach fuel pressure gauge, start engine, record fuel pressure. Turn engine off, watch fuel pressure gauge and record pressure after 15 minutes and 30 minutes. report back.

Paul, the OP said that he had a 97 with 145k, and mentioned 3.9 as a reference for fuel pressure. To me it means 97 GEMS.

I had the same symptoms in 2001 for several months. The truck would crank, the fuel pump would be on, but it would not start. Eventually tracked it down to immobilizer blowing two fuses due to a sticky door lock.

My error. Been lusting after a friends Classic lately and have 3.9 on the brain... :)

My truck is a 1997 4.0L GEMS. Fuel system is all original. As tested with my gauge, the fuel system readings were pretty much identical when tested 15~20 minutes later so it appears to be holding and maintaing pressure. Battery is strong. Plugs and wires are 2 years old. Last 3 or so years, the truck only gets about 5~6k miles annual on it.

The CkPS went south on the truck at about 35k miles and was replaced. That was in 2001. The symptoms, as I recall, were very similar.

I was thinking a blown fuse as well (and I checked them) but, as I mentioned, it fired up after sitting for about 30~40 minutes. The next day, running around doing errands with lots of stops, there were no issues. Everything appears to work electrically.

On another note, was a there a board/forum reset? Why is my post count only 2? Oh well.

Ugh. Wife decided to take the Disco out today while I was at work. Next time I'll hide the keys...

Started fine she said and drove around, but left her stranded at the store. No joy this time and no fuel at the valve on the injector rail. Towed home so I can fiddle some more.

cover pulled and 12v at purple/white wire on fuel pump when ignition turned, but the pump isn't turning on. Just love intermittent failures...

Back from a trip to Denver. New fuel pump (and new filter to CYA) installed. Louder then I remember the old one, but truck is up and running.

Thanks.
