Anyone here own, or have owned a BMW 2002 Tii ?

I've wanted one for quite a few years and now am ready to start building. I've narrowed it down to a '73, last year for round tail lights, fuel injection, small bumpers etc. But, I'd like to talk to folks who have had one.?

Anyone?

I've owned seven 2002's including a 1973 Tii - love those cars - what do you need to know? The mechanical injection can drive you crazy (lots of linkage adjustments) but the extra horsepower makes it all worth it.

I often thought of putting one of the later DOHC 318 motors in a 2002 - I had a 3i8Ti that was a lot of fun too - that engine in a 2002 body would be a blast.

PT,.. thanks and I'll PM you my number.

JackW... very nice ride. I work with a guy who is a BMW nut, so he has rekindled my fire.

He wants me to do the E30 M conversion, but I think I'll keep one stock for now.

Some questions are, especially form those that have owned them, is there a better year other than the '73.

Even though this would never see winter use, have you used yours for daily drivers in the summer?

What were some common concerns when owning/ driving your cars in regards to break downs etc?

I have had one, also had a '76 non Tii.

Really fun cars. The '76 I made into a convertible - yes really. :) VERY fun!

I also had one I swapped the entire running gear, subframes and all from a 1985 Audi 4000S Quattro into the 2002. Shit ton of work, and I could have done a prettier job but it was COOL! Had a somewhat "rally" stance to it and bulge fenders etc. The Audi 5cyl actually slightly stuck out of the grill and i had to tweak the front to fit it. But it looked good and if you didn't know it looked nice from the outside.

If you plan to mod it at all and swap motors - don't get a Tii, too valuable and rare. (This from a guy that has a TWR RRC and wants to put bumpers/sliders on it.... but they just bolt on/off.... anyway, moving right along)

Find a RUST FREE ONE! they are far from rugged in that respect.

I always wanted another one and to swap a LT1 in it. :D

I will keep a Tii stock. I may beat the hell out of my trucks, but my cars are very pampered.

Doug, why doesn't your reply surprise me?:) Oh, I pre ran the trails for Sat. , even your ghetto jet RRC can do it.

Thank Carey. I have had some odd projects over the years.....

I most likely will park the RRC but we'll see. I am starting to wonder if I want to do anything except a full "proper" restoration on her this winter and save her from any harsh use. She does in many ways deserve to be kept as a street Rangie - that's what the TWR was made for and maybe I should keep it such. Tough call.

A hybrid D90 beater put together for cheap but tough would be cool to tow behind the sexy TWR to the trails - then i can have fun and still home in comfort and class. :D

See you Sat.

Not much difference between a 1972 and 1973. The 2002's are easy to work on an very reliable (except for automatic transmissions). Watch for rust - Germans weren't very good at managing rust back in the early 1970's. Front suspension bushings will probably need replacing. The cars are very expensive to restore due to the amount of exterior trim. The 1974 and up cars have the trun signal stalk left of the column.

Back in the Eighties, my college roommate had a silver '72 Tii. What a great BMW. We re-built practically everything on it.

As stated, the 72 and 73 are almost the same. IIRC the '73 has a slightly different head casting and cam, not much else.

Don't butcher it. Keep it original. That Kugelfischer mechanical injection system is not bad at all once set up correctly. If you need the pump rebuilt make sure whoever does it knows what they are doing. I recommend Jerry Fairchild Industries in Redding, CA. We used them back when they were located in Corona years ago.

Owned many'a '02's!

Buy the driest car you can find - body work is A LOT more expensive then motor work. Look at rear shock towers, sills, window frames, spare tire well, 1/4 panels, floor pans, front "frame rail", and floor pans

I used a couple as daily drivers - when there was salt on the road I wold always try and wash the car off every few days...

They can be VERY dependable when if you take car of them - adjust valves and change oil religiously!

Hot rodding them? Hell yes! S-14 conversions make the car stupid quick, 304 cam and Weber 45DCOE's make a bad ass little M-10 motor, (it may not like to idle but it sounds bad ass at full song!) Throwing in a 5-speed is perhaps THE best thing you could do for one!

Tii's and the Kuglefischer mechanical pumps can be "finicky" but the old-school fuel injection is a hoot. If you REALLY want a killer little M-10, find yourself the rare,(read "expensive"), Alpina A4 slide throttle injection - FUCK that's a cool set up and you can pretend like your Hans Stuck or Ray Korman in the good old days!

Dammitt! Now I'm all waxing poetic for another damn 2002!!!!

Never owned a Tii but have owned one 74 2002. I've parted out at least 40 2002s as well as 1602s and a few 1800 and 2000s. Great litltle cars.
Just be carefull that with buying a real Tii make sure it is real. Not a made tii from a 2002. Run the vin number.
I'm guessing a nicely restored Tii with records and no rust issues(check those floor pans especially were the rear subframe bolts to the pan)is worth 15-25K these days. I'm sure you can get so-so Tiis in the 7K range but your probably buying something that will need paint and body work an easy 7K these days.
I was at the local BMW dealer last year and in there show room they had a nicely restored 71 2002. Decent paint job and was a one owner car. Nice chrome bumpers and mouldings but the car wasn't really that great. I mean it was stunning but seemed a little forcefully restored. They had a price of 37K on the window. Granted this was a BMW dealer and probably had no real intention of selling it. Crazy money.

Good luck.
