Ok, so I was going about my business, all set to do an oil change on my '03 RR, when it decided to act up. Literally as I was pulling the car up onto the ramps so I can get under it, it started to puke oil out of the filter housing! When I pulled the cap were bits and bobs hanging around on top of the filter and then I couldn't even pull the filter out! I had to unscrew it from the base and that thing is still stuck in the filter. Here are some pics.

Is this the first time you did an oil change on your RR yourself, or have you always had a mechanic do it. That doesn't look right. It looks like the filter is all mangled, and the oil looks bad. How long since your last oil change, and who did it?

wow, I had no idea that the stupid OIL FILTER was problem area on these cars. Anyone know if this has been an ongoing BMW problem, or did it just become a problem now that this BMW 4.4L is pushing around a green oval? Anyway, my local guy said he has seen a handfull of these cases, and he replaces the entire filter housing assembly when it comes up. The part is 235.00 from him, and it doesn't seem like a big deal to change it out.

Yes, this is the first time I have changed (or attempted to anyway) the oil. I bought it with a blown front diff / driveshaft at 64K and the book had been stamped for the 60K service interval at 61,000 miles. I am now at 67.5K and have this mess on my hands. Hopefully it won't be too much of an issue, the truck has run perfectly all this time.

So this mess has been sorted out and I've been driving the car on and off and now I'm back to doing another oil change. Everything is nice and normal this time, but does anyone know how to reset the oil service light? I don't have an owners manual for the car, and searching here hasn't come up with much.

Yes it was an BMW problem. Right around 1999 when they switched to synthetic oils and longer intervals. They're a lot smarter than Land Rover, they fixed it very quickly. We were filling out reports with Land Rovr for 2 years, then I left the company.
DO NOT buy your filters from Land Rover, buy them from BMW. As for your current issue, make a couple hooks out of very stiff wire, and pul the lower filter plate out of the housing. Clean it out and you'll be fine. The engine already ate the missing filter anyway.

Thanks for the info. I got a brand new filter from Rover, but when you open the box, it says BMW right on top. I have replaced the entire filter housing assembly about a year ago, no problems since. There was no missing filter, just some extra pieces when I opened it up the first time. That has all been sorted out, I'm just looking for the oil service reset procedure.

With ignition turned off, press and hold LH instrument panel button. With button depressed, turn key to position I. Continue to hold for five seconds until "SIA reset" appears, then release the button. It will flash "reset SIA 3600 kms" and "Inspection". Press the button for another five seconds until "Reset" appears.

Switch the ignition off.

Key off. No messages on display. Push and hold the left dash button. Turn the key to position 1. 10-15 seconds, it will say reset sai. Release button, then hold it again. 10-15 seconds later I think reset flashes. Release and press, it should go to 15550.
