There is a seal that needs to be replaced on the top of the oil filter housing when you change the filter. If it is leaking from the edge of the black top, then yes. Go to the auto parts store and get a new oil filter o-ring seal.

I'd bet that the oil filter housing mounts are broken too. I'd just replace the filter with a genuine one, I've seen a bunch of aftermarket ones fall apart.

oh ya, definaly only use genuine or BMW filters, the aftermarket made in tiawan ones will fall apart.

Kyle:
You make me laugh with your disdain for aftermarket parts! When I worked for Vorderman Motor Werks, I bought aftermarket oil filters for BMWs by the hundreds and never had a problem with them-although we weren't using them on Land Rovers. Mann, Bosch, Mahle, Wix all make good aftermarket oil filters, I highly doubt that BMW makes their own oil filters, I believe their OE are Mann or Mahle.

BTW-Wix filters are not all made in America any more. It won't be long before they aren't made in the US.

lol, ya i agree. I only say genuine or bmw because its easy to get them.

I have seen many cheap bmw oil filters come apart and jam up in the oil passages... sucks when you have to replaces expensive parts because you wanted to save $3 on a filter...

last BMW filter i replaced was a Mahle. the one that came out had 200 miles on it and was already breaking up, made in taiwon.

Maybe I have had bad luck with after market, but every seal, gasket, part and even oil filters have leaked on me...

I've had horrible luck with genuine coolant hoses!

I've had two BeCMs that were bad out of the box, those were expensive warranty claims that Land Rover took months to credit me back for.

I understand that it's not at all uncommon for 4.4 fuel pumps to be dead out of the box or to have non-functioning level senders. Valeo hits home runs with those!

Just like so many things in life, it's a crap shoot.
