Thanks Joshua, very cool retrofit. I guess this will be my next project. I would rather tackle a partial engine rebuild over buying a new engine. I now have 79,000 miles and feel like I am driving a ticking time bomb. Let me know if yours ever goes out.

Do you also worry about lightning striking you dead, or other unreasonable fears?

Land Rover built those engines for a long time with few problems. Few people have catastrophic problems with their engines. In every case where I've had to replace an engine, it was either poor work by the machine shop/repair shop involved, or pilot error.

If not overheated and oil changed frequently, these engines are VERY robust.

Hey Guys,

Thanks ptschram vbmenu_register("postmenu_692289", true); for your comments. I actually wanted to retract that as soon as I hit reply. Perhaps, it came across too harsh. It will not happen again.

I talked to my dad last night about the possible ?Oil Pump Failure? issue. My dad has been under cars and trucks since he was 14 yrs old, so I value his opinion. He smiled then laughed a little, but not in a mean way. He said those engines with misaligned oil pump/timing belt covers would not last anything over 20,000 miles. Those that went out at around 50,000 were probably few and far between and those with higher mileage probably have some other underlying issue. That being said, I would like to run some statistics. If the VINs are sequential, that means 36,561 rigs were affected by this technical alert. Can someone verify the numbers are sequential? So let?s divide this number by 4. That gives us 9,140 per quarter. My Disco hasn?t crapped out yet (knock on wood), I fall in the second quarter and mine was bought in San Antonio TX. I also have 79,000 miles and she still sounds very strong with no clacking noise. So, I would like to ask everyone that falls within the VIN range to e-mail me your VIN range (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th quarter), miles (at pump failure), where originally bought, and current miles if it hasn?t failed. Please e-mail me at mapman97@gmail.com and put 2003 Disco Survey as the subject.

I will post the results.

Thank you,

Gerry

My pump did not fail completely but the outer rotor was cracked in three places. I'm looking at modifying the front cover to accept a external, crank driven, oil pump. Would help me sleep at night!

VIN SALTW16403A778494 with 60,000 mile on her.

Hey All,

We installed an oil pressure guage this weekend. I notice the shop manual states 50 lbf.in2 at 2000 rpm. Mine runs at 46 lbf.in2 at 2250 rpm. I believe mine runs 42 lbf.in2 at 2000 rpm. What is the normal range? For those who installed a guage, what are you running at 2250 rpm (65 m/h)?

Thanks,

That is fantastic oil pressure, don't sweat a thing!

For those of you who have a 2003 Discovery and fear having oil pump failure, this may be a preventive measure for early detection of a weak pump. I installed this over the weekend.

This should fit all DII's and maybe even DI if the thread on the oil pressure switch is the same as the DII's.

Where did you get the oil pressure switch adapter? I've been making them out of bum pressure switches. The later DII has a different thread pitch than the earlier ones and I haven't spent much time looking for an adapter.

I rarely get over 50mph on this island...so maybe one day i'll will and hopefully that day i remember to note my oil pressure at 65mph and let u know.

Amazonhose.com

all the information i have is noted on the picture album for the oil gauge setup. I wish i knew more.

would you be so nice as to post the part numbers?
I don't know the part numbers. The hose was custom made. The T fitting had to be threaded to match the threads of the hose, sending unit, and stock pressure switch.

It took me a good while to figure it all out and I simply drew up a diagram of what i wanted and sent it to them via my father and they made everthing in house. only non-custom part that can probably be purchased from Amazonhose is the adapter that screws into the front cover but i have no idea what part # that is.

There are many other ways to put something like this together. At the time of doing mine I had yet to have found someone who had done it and posted pics with details of the fittings so i thought i should. I even bought a second pressure switch and send it to my father just so he can match the threads and size for the T fitting.

If you could get a few more put together I bet you could make some coin with that setup.

I have them for the DI and the early Motronics engines, with braided lines even! But, I haven't been able to find a source for the fitting for the later Motronics oil pressure switch.

In my case, I sourced a replacement oil pressure switch so that the only point at which I had to contend with the BSPP thread profile was right at the front cover and everything from that point could be NPT. Unfortunately, the late Motronics engines use a two conductor connector and I have yet to find a compatible oil pressure switch with a tapered pipe thred.

I'm heading into town later today, I'll hit the hydraulic shop and see what I can find.

I believe the size is 1/4 BSPP, but am not certain.

I found some adapters here:

http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/18-npt-female-to-18-bspt-male-adapter.asp

If that link doesn't work go to accessories down on the lower left side of the page.

They also have an oil filter sandwich adapter that works with our trucks.

http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/oilfilter-sender-adapter-34unf-16.aspx

Post up what you find.

IIRC, the oil cooler line is under pressure as well (not sure about that) - maybe it would be easier to make a T there.

Yeah I removed the oil cooler port plug, (03-04) dont have engine oil coolers and thought about using that port but I figured the oil pressure switch port would be best seeing how that is the exact location where it monitors the pressure...if that makes sense. plus the manual says to use the oil switch port to test oil pressure.
