Snapped off the blade from my key fob this week.... So all I need is the snap in blade. No reprograming required.

Called Land Rover Dallas (nearest LR dealer, 360 miles away) and they said that they can only sell the entire remote fob with blade for about $270. I asked about a valet key but they said no such thing existed, that only the remote version was available. I asked about just te blade and they said they don't sell it like that.

I found several blanks on ebay that are economical. I asked of they would cut a key from a valet blank I found online and they said that since no valet key existed for the 2004 they must be for a D1 and that they would not work, that the shank is too long. I

Can anyone let me know the truth here... I feel like the parts department is just trying to get money out of me. Is there any place that can do this other than the dealer? Will valet keys that say D2 work if I can get them cut. it seems silly to buy a remote key fob that I have no need for and cannot get programmed anyway since I'm so far fro a dealer.

Thanks in advance.

What you probably need to know is 'did the keys for D2's change between 1999 and 2004'?

If not, then I can attest that the dealer you're speaking to is full of shit. Go find a halfway decent locksmith, give them the blade from your FOB and ask them to make a copy (or three).

FYI...the blank is an Ilco RV4-P.

well thats the problem... the blade is gone and its my only key (yeah I should have done this earlier)

I'm gonna have to have someone cut a key based on my VIN. I don't see a way around that unless a locksmith can cut a key directly from the ignition.

Call a good locksmith. They should be able to either cut a key from the ignition/lock cylinder in the door, or they may be able to re-key the existing cylinders.

If I were you, I would get a quote from the locksmith for what it will cost, then call Will, PT, Marty, or Randy and see what a new door lock and ignition w/ matching keys would cost. If you can install them yourself, it might be cheaper to replace the ignition/door lock.

I also found the blank for the blade independant from the fob....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Land-Rover-Discovery-Series2-Key-Blade-Blank-Remote-/250872243550?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ADiscovery&hash=item3a6926a55e#ht_1086wt_983

So it appears that the Dallas dealer is definitely trying to work me over.... so since both valet and blank blades are available; I just need to find a decent dealer to cut them.

Anyone know a dealer that will use your own blank rather than require you purchase it from them? Is there any independent mechanic or locksmith that can do this based on VIN? Is the dealer the only option for VIN cut keys?

Had not updated my location to TX yet. Fixed now.

Amarillo is 360 miles from Dallas, 260 from Oklahoma City, and 280 from Albuquerque.

They closed the dealership here 2 years ago.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll report back how it all works out.

Yes, let us know. I need another key, as I only have one. I lose that one and I'm fubared. On a side note, check out Palo Duro Canyon, that's south of Amarillo. I grew up in that area.

Be prepared with your registration

we don't have that crap here, it stays on the car

Have you tried LR Ft Worth? Different ownership than Dallas and Frisco so maybe they'd have a different key cutting policy. They'd also probably save you and hour on your commute, but the neighborhood is a dump.

Most locksmiths can scope the lock and build a key that way. I've had keys cut for all kinds of thing where all I had was the lock.

On my 2003 D2, I had a key cut at the hardware store. I think it was an Ilco RV4 key blank. If you still have the part that snapped off, the hardware store may be able to use that to cut a new key from it.

I used that key for a couple years until I busted the weak rod in the door lock since I did not like to carry the huge key fob around. But, after busting and fixing the door lock, I went back to the fob so I don't bust the door lock again.
