Damn. Lance is laying here, knife to the heart, just forked over cold cash for new tires AND an '04 that blew up, and here comes Daryl, pissing salt all over him.

Turboguy is literally splitting hairs with Denny over an engine that's built and on the road already.

...and I am doing my best to sell him a P38 motor.
Dweb at its finest. :smilelol:

Dude, why dont you download rave, buy a p38 engine, and save thousands? You will learn a lot and it'll take a less time than 2 months. Even if you need to buy some tools to get the job done right it will be worth it.

Was there any of that quick seal shit in the coolant? If so I'd probably demand a refund...

It's what keeps the masses coming back Joel. ;)

Lance, If it makes you feel any better my '03 is my daily guzzler.

Just got home from my trip down south and now have 830 miles on the clock since it was first fired up last Saturday morning. I'll probably have another 850-1000 on it by next Sunday.

There is oversized, by maybe 20thou, and then there is oversized by what looks like maybe 160 thou if those pics are anything to go by ???

The one benefit, is that this wider liner is obviously being clamped in place by the firing ring now, so is in essence similar to a top-hat liner.

I think you are mistaken, if you look at the I.D. bevels the new liners look a lot thicker but look at the distance from the edge of the liner to the dowel pin.

Denny it looks like you cleaned up the casting flash in the valley before sending the block out.

Good eye Joel, I was wondering if anyone would spot the chamfer on the old liners.

The shop that built my engine primarily builds High horsepower drag, dirt track and asphalt motors and they hit the casting before I had mentioned it.

I guess I've been lucky having LR's as daily drivers for the last 13 years and maybe should buy a couple of lottery tickets :) My 95 D1 had 440,000 kms and the only time it let me down was when the starter gave up the ghost. As it was a 5sp at the time I could have jump started but it was more convenient to use CAA and have it towed to the repair shop. My P38 had 335,00 kms when the water pump failed, other than that it never let me down, my 03 D2 was purchased with a blown engine. Ordered a block and installed it and it has had over 85,000 kms on the new engine. Only issue was the new water pump that failed after 3 weeks. The RR Classics my wife had (1990 & 1991), well that's a different story ....

I wasn't saying they can't be reliable. Sounds like you were maintaining them and got them up to date on maintenance backlogs.

The other part of my point is that in the US you typically don't have a lot of choices for parts unless you happen to be fortunately located. Most people are going to have to hit the dealership if they need something on an emergency basis as local parts stores are likely to have nearly nothing past brake pads, filters, batteries, and (if it's not a D2) wipers and thermostats. I did find a starter at autozone once, but I had to drive past two other ones to the only store in the area that had it in stock. This translates to trading downtime for cash outlay, which isn't something most people can't do if they have only one vehicle.

You bought a D2 as your only vehicle?

So this advice is too late but: that's a really bad idea. Not because they are particularly unreliable (they are fine-ish when serviced well and up to date on maintenance...which is an example you're unlikely to find...most are in maintenance debt quite badly) but having to rush for parts and service will absolutely kill you. If you need them running in a hurry after a problem you're going to have to empty your wallet.

In fact, I'm not sure I could ever in good conscience tell anyone that owning one is a good idea unless you are capable, equipped, and have the facilities to work on one yourself. This is why they are so cheap as far as purchase price. Nothing is for free: pay now, or pay later in cash or sweat.

my 04 is approaching 100k miles and is pissing coolant, oil, tcase oil, and probably something else. despite keeping up on the maintenance they are just wallet workers, still love it.

fact of the matter is I had a 9 hour drive with the family last week, wife and two little ones. I went and rented a car after having cold sweats thinking about my disco purging itself on I77 in the mountains of WV. Best decision, my hunk o rover sat for a week and the fuel savings alone paid for the rental :D

I do not recommend these vehicles to anyone that isnt ready to play with it like its a toy. they are fine for around town and for fun, anything more and you could be in for a bad day, unfortunately.

Good eye Mason, I was wondering if anyone would spot that the block looks different.

I took them 2 blocks and they decided to use the second block. If you look at the 3rd hole down you'll notice that the liner has been removed on the block with the standard liners. Both bloks are from GEMS trucks and for some weird reason the second block has been drilled and tapped for the early style heads. I've seen a few random blocks that have the extra bolt holes including an '03 block with no stamping for the CR below the head.
