3.5 heads

My '88 RRC with original 99k miles 3.5 is showing 30psi on cylinder #2. All other cylinders show proper compression of 165-170.

My guess is it needs a valve job. But, inside the valve covers is a right mess with carbon buildup everywhere. Guessing I will find similar situation under the valley pan, so, thinking will probably end up doing cam, lifters, timing set, and rebuild or replace the heads.

Would like to not have the vehicle down for too long, so, prefer to source good used or rebuilt heads. I don't think it much matters what they are from. What have you got?

Feel free to suggest other options.

Thanks, DB in DC

If you can't find a pair of rebuilt heads…. I have an old pair off an '88 you can have for free just pay shipping. They will need a minimum of cleaning & surfacing.

I'm currently doing the same… just need to order all my parts and put her back together.

DB, you might check with Will Tillery.
I believe he is set up again in the new place and may have a shop doing heads by now.

And you already know the other option.....

We stock heads for quick turnaround in the shop, but the story you tell of crud in the motor isn't going to be resolved by slapping some heads on. That is in invitation to disaster - if an oil gallery plugs you will destroy the engine. The motor should come out and be tank cleaned to remove all sludge and crud. Heads are part of the cleaning.

Once it is apart and on the bench, the job of redoing the heads is just a few hours. There is no need to buy more.
