This is mostly a curiosity. My understanding is the slipped liner issue is mostly in later engines, typically later D2s with 4.6 engines.

How often have you seen a 4.0 from a GEMS D1 with a slipped liner? I personally have seen one in a 96 D1 that occurred at 55,000 miles but I purchased it that way and do not know if overheating contributed to the problem.

I have not but from what I’ve read and understand that it’s primarily overheating that causes a slipped liner. My 97 D1 has 320,000 no slipped liner.

Ive only seen it in LSE's. maybe the people who knew what they were doing left in 97

and overheating only causes it if the block was made incorrectly. I've overheated the crap out of my 99, as did the PO, and it won't die

Yeah the LSE trim level had a massive recall. I’m sure some of those engines didn’t get destroyed like they should have been.
I was really surprised when someone posted up a GEMs engine with a slipped liner. But yes, it really does appear to be a thing.

IIRC the casting numbers weren't too far apart for a few of us that had it happen. I think mine happened after I blew that small tapered hose and it got hot. The piston skirt was busted too but the original head gaskets looked good.

It happens. My son's first car was a 97D1. It overheated when the coolant res cracked that third summer he owned it. The lessons he learned from that whole ownership experience pay dividends for a long time.

The block is cracked, it isn’t a liner issue. The liner never touches coolant (unless the block is cracked).

03-04 motors had liners that would move up and down when hot causing a knock, but no other symptoms. They would run forever like that.
