Not long ago I sold a core engine out of a 04 4.6 d2 to a customer. When he tore it down the crank was marked "4.0" on the top. I figured somewhere along the way someone had swapped the crank. I apologized to the customer and told him I would send him a crank and pistons set out of a 4.6. Today I tore down a motor out of an 01 4.6 P38 and the crank is marked "4.0" on top. Do I just have the worst luck ever to have found 2 4.6 motors in a row that were rebuilt with 4.0 cranks or did they mark some 4.6 cranks 4.0? Is there a measurement I can take to verify what motor the crank is for?

Rod length and piston dish will be different too. I don't think you'll be able to reliably measure crank throw but the difference is about .2"

You can definitely tell by looking at the pistons. FWIW, there was a time when Bosch 4.0 short blocks were $600 through Land Rover, so I'm sure a lot of 4.6s were replaced with 4.0s.

On the bright side, Marty, think of all the unexpected welcome surprises you have found in consoles, glove boxes, door pockets, and under the floor mats of Rovers that you have dismantled. At some point I think a top ten list would be in order.

Off the top of my head

1. Cat guillotine

2. Glock 40

3. Green Coach calfskin gloves my wife still wears

4. 3 real Mont Blanc pens, 4 fake ones

5. Chris Stapleton Cd a month before it came out (plain white cd with all sorts of warnings not to distribute it)

6. Megaphone, blue ray player in box, tire beater and camp chairs from the masters (same car)

7. Green tortoise shell Gucci sunglasses

8. "Harold's book of knowledge". 400 hand written pages of thoughts plagiarized from Fox News

9. Empty wine glass, half empty bottle of apple vodka, when we powered it up there was an Adele cd cranked all the way up. It was a rollover. Someone's day went from bad to worse

10. 4 garbage bags of Stacy Adams clothes and shoes. I sold or gave most of it away but I still have a baller class sweater

I'm sure if I took time to think I could come up with others

Wow. Given that pile of loot I would say that on balance you have come out ahead even if you landed 2 mixed-up cranks.
