where i'm at right now, duh...
all check out fine. I replaced the old bearings and races on both sides even though the old ones looked perfectly fine.

The new shaft has some play in the lower u joint that bolts to the pinion flange. I grab ahold of it and it clicks when I shake it, but Tom said that some play was normal. I think this is enough play to make some noise.... They didn't replace this joint when I sent it back. So I'm going to put the stock shaft in, and adjust the pinion so its set for that shaft. I didn't get a chance to do that today so i'll do it first thing tomorrow.

stock driveshaft, flat pinion, and it sounds worse than with the tom woods shaft on.

2 bad shafts? i don't know... but i'm taking the truck down to a local driveline and gear shop this week to have it fixed. I've spent months on this and I'm about to explode.

We'll see if I keep this truck after the problem is solved. I've spent more time fixing it than I have driving it. Amount of time four wheeling? haha, that's a joke....

I could have a rock crawler for the amount of money i've spent on this piece of fucking shit land rover.

Hi,

as a rule of thumb we usually find :

'whine' is ring and pinion,

'rumble' is bearings

'vibration' is propshaft (usually due to a suspension lift)

you mentioned the noise changed when you changed the diff,

if you still have one of the old 3.54 take out diffs or can borrow a known good one I would suggest either running this in the rear or if you are happy the front 4.11 is quiet, putting this in the rear and the old/borrowed 3.54 in the front to plug the axle and running it in diff lock with the front prop off,

it means a bit of swapping but it's the only way I can see to eliminate the diff and make progress with it,

I very much doubt it's the oil or the ARB,

Well, I don't have any other diffs to swap around with. The truck is going down to the driveline and gear shop whenever I can get an appointment.

I can't take working on it anymore, it's just driving me crazy at this point.... one problem with over several months of working on it, and it's still not completely gone.

Like I said on LRR months ago, it's the dif. The driveline shop will pop that sucker out and be able to tell you exactly what about it was set up wrong.

Quote " this piece of fucking shit...". Been there!
I was so totaly frustrated I took all of her stuff I have collected over the years and took pictures as free-bees for the buyer. I cleaned her up, ran the ad, had some calls. It was only then she realized how good I was to her and she began being cooperative again.
Oh man, if the right person came along with the money, bye-bye! However, all I got was young kids looking for a cool ride and I could not bring myself to sell them this maint-hog.
I purposefully stood in the garage talking to interested buyers so she would overhear me.
That did the trick. She is fussy at times, but I learned to live with her.

If I had the time, I would tell you about my anger with the Rover, but that's a different story.

At 37,000 miles, my 2004 D2 had a vibe; after they replaced 2 rear tires, both drive shafts, it turned out to be a TC bearing. I got alot of new parts for nothin. A new TC and I've been ok so far..well, both diffs have had to be replaced etc

yeah....

but i'm still pissed at it. I've calmed down and don't want to sell my truck, but I'm not gonna be happy until this nightmare is over. The pig goes down to the shop in the morning.

what did the shop say ?

He said the drive shaft is fne, but there's definitly something wrong with the diff.

That's because Bill reused the gears, once they're set-up wrong and driven on they're fucked and you need brand new ones.

The diff as in the differential, or the "diff" as in something inside the 3rd member? I seriously doubt that there was something wrong with two ARBs in a row. Given that your problems are load specific it sounds like a ring/pinion problem.. either being setup wrong, bad manufacturing, or somehow damaged.

Our gear guy agrees that used gears are almost impossible to get right the 2nd time.

this was my point as well...plain and simple the gears were set up wrong and thats why they are noisy.

its unfortunate for the person that set them up but it is what it is.

now if the same pinion bearings where used in both set ups there could still be a remote chance that thats it but everything seems to be pointing at gears.

wooooo... back this train up guys!

Diff number 1 and diff number 2 are COMPLETELY different. I sent Bill the first diff, he checked it out and sent it back, the problem wasn't fixed. So he then built an entirely different diff and sent it to me. I put diff number 2 in, and sent back number 1 a day later. Now diff number two sounds a LOT better, but there's still the same type of noise i heard before, just not as loud.

that clarify somewhat?

The local shop said they can put a diff together for me and warrant the gears/work. That's what I'll probably do... it's going to cost me a lot more money, but I can't keep sending stuff back and forth to Utah. It just sucks that all the money I spent in the begining has gone out the window...

Bill has been and continues to be very helpfull with this, but I'm probably just going to go this route. Not 100% sure though...

hey just to be clear i never said a word about Bill, I have been under the impression he has a outside company do the set ups...hence my

its unfortunate for the person that set them up but it is what it is.

truth be told it is just unfortunate...hope it works out
