$700 bucks in machine work…updated

yep…Marks 4WD sucks monkey's balls…guess the metric system down under is off by 0.71mm. Had to have the spline roots cut to fit a UnderDrive, after sending them specifics…long story short, don't waste your time with them…using thier 4L80E to LT-230 kit

both…got quotes from 4 different shops. Go get a quote to fix something that been hardened. Guy who did the work has been in the aerospace industry since before you were born.

find a shop to machine the root spline by .71mm without fucking up the temper…not happy...There are 2 shops that can do interior spline cuts to match a output shaft of 4L80E and both of those wanted anywhere from 675 to 750 for the one off piece.

The good news is whatever you are building you will definitely get the money you invested out of it.

Yeah, right

Just like I'm gonna buy a 3k disco, put 10k in mods on it and expect for the value to magically increase by the same amount...right, that's how'd it works, you get back every penny you put in to it right...

Have your boyfriend post up a quote for the following, or better yet give me his contact info and I'll post up his quote for the following:

Cutting 10 splines in hardened 4130 Chromo moly with a Rockwell hardness of 56-58.
Tooling, set-up and machine time broken out by the hour
Any heat treating or annealing if needed before or after the cutting-grinding of the new splines

OR

Cut a shaft with LR 10 Spline on one end to a length 5.5 inches, Interior splined on the other to fit a 4L80E spline to a depth of 5 inches, bearing surfaces polished and hardened to a Rockwell of 56 to 58.

Yep, I find it hard to believe that there's a conspiracy or consortium between the 4 shops in Tucson I checked with to rip me off. It was expensive because of the hardness of the shaft and non-standard tooling.

Seriously, post up a quote, and not the "special friend" discount price

Withya…If I wasn't quoted about the same price from 4 different shops, I would have gone another route. Let's see what your guy say's…

It also could be that the shop rates are stupid expensive here compared to your private island

Same price as making this one work...if the splines weren't tapered the cost would have been around 400 bucks...

I guess the real issue here is Frank is paying to fix Mark's hunk of metal that doesn't fit.

Why did you not use Nick's adapter kit?

Using a gen III motor and 4l80e, not a gen IV and 6l80e...

I thought he did Gen 3 motors, too?
Or maybe he just did it in the past...
Oh well, live and learn. I guess I'll plan on a Gen 4 when my diesel dies....
