we actually have ordered a heat shroud/wrap for the starter because its definitely hotter than the '95 after running the same trails. The spade connector on the starter was incredibly loose, actually knocked it off with just a bump of my finger so that was crimped a bit before put back on the other day.

going to wait on the heat wrap, install and see if we can reproduce the issue.
thanks.

rebuilt starter is in, with heat wrap.
ran several trails on the property for about 40 minutes. came back and shut off, started right back up.
Really need to drive this for an hr or so to really test but i'm hoping we've corrected this issue. Thanks to all for the help.

onto the other less critical issues on the road to passing inspection.

If you have a new-ish starter that is failing due to heat-soak, you are masking a problem that will only get worse and doubtless will rear its ugly head at the least opportune time-like when you are miles from assistance and alone! Ask me how I know.

I have many Rovers that do not have heat shields on the starters and they do not exhibit this behavior.

Whether you buy a starter from me or not, please replace that starter as it is not exhibiting behavior that a nearly new starter should.
