All:

I've seen a couple of D1's FS on Craigslist that will only go in reverse.

Have you successfully fixed this? If so, how?

Thanks,

Paul.

Curious if you ever found anything on this. I'm looking at a 1996 Disco 1 to replace or use for parts on my '97. I drove it today and it felt great in reverse. Has 161k on it and the transmission fluid was red and clean. When you put it in gear the car can roll forward and doesn't feel like its shifted at all, D, 3, 2, 1 all behave the same in this respect. Any info appreciated!

That sounds like a typical issue that used to be seen with the BMW autos from the mid-late '80s. They also used the 4hp22eh trans and the issue usually came from reving the engine while in park as would happen during the emission testing or A/C charging. The A pack clutches would burn up leaving the vehicle only operating in reverse. This trans could have the clutch pack replaced without complete rebuild from the front of the unit. There were some internal valving updates made to keep from having this happen in the future and I would have thought that the LR trans would have had this incorporated into its design as it came at a later date.
