Guys, a little background...after picking up my special "oh so cool" pants from Garrett in June I was driving home and blew out my water pump...no problem ordered a new one and on she went. BTW some bloke in a 93? RRC stopped to see if I was ok on Rte 15 in between Middleburg and Leesburg...THANKS MAN, if you are on here.

Anyways, now if I am driving slow, around town, or idling for an extended time the tempo guage spikes up A LOT! So as I was driving today I wound the windows down and turned on the heating, full, this dropped the temp guage down to a normal operating level...prob ID'd...RIGHT? If I leave the internal temp guages set to hot, with no fan it still operates perfectly in the middle of the temp guage..so this tells me the radiator is stuffed, as the fan works and a new water pump is on...RIGHT? Putting the heater on acts like a second radiator...so I assume the "real" radiator is buggered.

Tomorrow morning I am going to try and clean out the bugs and shite from the grill - if any...but?

Q is...correct diagnosis? If so - where to get the best new one? Anyone have a recommendation? I don't want to mess around buying a used one.

If it's the original radiator, then it most likely is stuffed. You might be able to get it re-cored. I got mine re-cored a couple years ago, but I think it's stuffed again as I'm getting increased temperatures during slow climbs uphill. I had another Rover where they couldn't re-core it, so it's a gamble. Plus, you would only be extending it's life just a bit longer.

I got a replacement from Will Tillery and will be putting it in this weekend. I can't beat his prices anywhere else.

I had the same exact problem on mt 92 RRC. And sure enough, a "new" used radiator did the trick. Mine was so clogged, that only the 2 top inches of the rad had any water running thru it.

Sven: The options on this site are:

Autotrust $667
Performance $492
Nissens $517
AMR $589

PDX: I was thinking about this route - but from everyone else's experience it seems a "re-core" only lasts a year or two, or maybe a little more??? My fans: clutch, and front electronic ones all work fine.

Ive used 2 "performance" brand D1/RRC rads. They work OK but they are only 3 core instead of 4 core (stock). PLus the fill hole is a smaller thread, so if you have a brass plug, it wont fit. I also had to trim the fan shroud to make it fit right.

If a recore is done right, it should last a long time. But the problem is finding someone who stilll does this. Its a dying art. Most cars nowadays use disposable aluminum rads.

sound like people have some shitty radiator shops if thats the case. we usually dont have to deal with re-cores since we dont get near the corrosion issues out here. for the cost of those new ones i would just get a good used one from the west coast and have it boiled out.

How are the pants!?

There was a guy in Front Royal that can do re-cores. Let me see if I can dig up the number somewhere, but the price was not crazy either like some places I've seen before. Like Sven said a proper re-core should last a long time. This way he can bench test it first and then determine that is needs re-cored.

I think it was this place. Not 100% sure, but worth a call.

Cheers Garrett...I will give it a go.

Love the pants!!

Called them, thanks mate - right guys!...now I have to wait for the rain to bugger off, take it out and drive on up. Rodding out is $64, he will test it to see what it needs....fingers crossed it is just gunked up somewhere...
