I had this high idle problem a long time ago and a friend of mine told me to simply unplug the MAS mass air flow sensor, I did and it dropped the high idle (2500 RPM) down to 8-900 RPM and has been great for almost a year now. Me and my brother were tinkering and he noticed it was unplugged and plugged it back, NOW the high idle is back even after I unplugged it AGAIN! I also tried unplugging the throttle positioning sensor TPS and replugging the both multiple times, to no avail. Why is my engine running so high?? , all the throttle components are in correct position. What causes this?!! WHAT CAN I DOOO

Autozone said they couldn't read it > go figure, so Im at a loss for getting the codes unless I want to drive 100+ miles to the stealership. I will look into finding some place or way to retrieve the codes, but meanwhile is there anything else I can check that may cause the engine to idle so high?

When you go to the zone and have them read it before you turn the car back on unplug the fuel pump underneath the rear drivers tire. I have noticed my code reader can read the codes when I do that. Also I have 10 dollars that you have a low voltage code or p0562

Adaptive values reset? . . And no it is not a result from any new components that I am aware of, if I recall it Just happened one day, around a year ago. YES IT IS VERY ANNOYING! I have the 5 spd.

Thanks Timmy, Ill try unplugging that next time, probably look odd taking off a tire in the parking lot : ) can you elaborate on the low voltage code, and or p0562 code

You won't have to take the tire off to get to the plug. You can get to it pretty easily to unplug without taking it off. I don't know what the low voltage code solution is yet. Been trying to figure it out on both discos that I have. I have been told it was the wire that goes from the battery to the fuse box but I am not sure what it is...

I'm thinking it might have something to do with the sensor right below the TPS (MAS I thought). Possibly a vacuum leak, I took the sensor off and checked it out. I was not sure what I was looking at but, possibly its gone bad? After taking it off and repositiong the tip it changed the idle, unfortunately higher, I tried several times reattaching it in different screwed or unscrewed positions but it always seemed to come out in the same position, maybe its vibrating itself loose? Or doing what its supposed to? Unfortunately now the truck wont start unless I give it gas and keep it alive. Sorry Im not being very detailed but I cant seem to find a picture of it anywhere to relay any info on it, always thought it was the MAS sensor, but regardless its the sensor that helps to allow/control air flow located right below and to the left a couple inches of the TPS. I did a search on ebay for it but couldnt find it under 'Mass Airflow Sensor', but that was something different. A box looking thing, attached to a large hose. .

I spent today trying to fix the same thing on my mine!! Mine is running around 1,800 rpm. Let me know if you find the answer and I will do the same for you.

Timmy,
Did you inspect your idle air valve? I took mine out and tried to adjust the screwable 'male' part to maybe reposition where its is in there - changing the amount of air its allowing through. But when I tried this, it only made it worse (2700-3000 RPM). Seemed like it was going back to the same position everytime, So im thinking maybe its not functioning properly or is dunsky. Maybe GOING bad in your case if it only causes trouble Sometimes. . I'm going to order an Idle Air Control Valve off ebay (return policy) and see if that fixes it. But meanwhile wondering if there is anything else or any other components involved in this problem, although 'Idle Airc Control Valve' does kinds hit the nail on the head sounds like, buut you never know on our rovers. I'll keep you all posted, keep fiddling and let me know what gives ; )

DAM TPS! I unscrewed and adjusted the TPS and I could put the idle where i wanted it! Careful not to disrupt its position as I put the bolts back in, as mine seemed very finicky. It idled nice and quiet how it should, so I took it for a ride and the haunting high idle CAME BACK! Every time I would push my clutch in the RPM's would race up to 3k. . But oddly enough right before I turned into the drive it went away. . . . ? So I have a normal idle right now, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. At least I do know now that the TPS has been at fault and or whatever is commanding the TPS. I also found a slight vacuum leak around the Idle Air Control Valve, due to one of the holes for the screws being stripped out (once all the way in it just turns and turns) Although pushing and holding it in to seal the leak it DID not change the idle. Moral of this story - - CHECK your TPS's

This has been very irritating, my idle would seem to be different every day, (either high or too low, and not idle without help). I would have to get out and adjust the idle if I wanted to leave the driveway. . I unplugged the Idle Air Control Valve and the erratic idle has seemed to finally stabilize, although its far from perfect, just works. . I am at a loss now as if I should replace the IAC or the TPS or if the computer is messing up?? - sending wrong signals too these sensors. . . ??? Has anyone had a similar problem and found a solution? :banghead:

OK, first off Zak, I'm sorry about the delay on your parts, your package sat in Memphis for almost a week before I got it and when I got it, it didn't have the throwout bearing so I had to rush to get you one.

It sounds to me like it's the TPS. I have one in stock, it's a genuine Land Rover badged part.

Adaptive values are the minor tweaks to the fuel map that are "learned" by the ECU and compensate for your driving habits, fuel, altitude, etc.
