since there are four wires going into the fuel pump.. im assuming 2 are ground, on is + for pump and the fourth is for the sending unit? could it be that the connections inside the tank have just all gone bad... (obviously ill check this once i take out the pump)

im going to do a little more detective work before i throw down for a new pump... but im just curious... can i follow these procedures:
http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14451

using a P74006 fuel pump from Napa lke you said in your previous post, is it basically the same thing?

Does anyone happen to know if a MASTER E3270 fuel pump from autozone will work in a 96 disco? i can't really tell from here... (not sure if all year 4.0 are the same)

thanks

thinking out loud here.....

it looks like the one common thing between the fuel level sensor and the fuel pump is the ground wire.. they share the same one according the diagram.... but its gotta be a bad connection inside the tank since the connector is getting 12 volts when the ign is on per my previous post...

seems like either that, or both power wires (the w/p one for the fuel pump and the g/b one for the level sensor) inside the tank have somehow gone bad....

I had an issue like this on my 98.... tore my hair out for 2 days lookin at this shit....the took it to local shop.

pull out the whole pump assembly, look the the plastic where the connectors run through it, it the plastic is brown(burnt color) then you will need to replace the whole assembly, i think they were like 170 from the dealer...

try that

snatch, i think you may be on to something...

when i disconnected the connector (at the fuel pump)... the connector at the harness end looked fine.. but the connector on the pump itself.. i looked inside and where each of the 4 pins meets the plastic there are little brown "burnish" looking marks.....

I'll take the pump out this weekend and see what it looks like...

Thanks again everyone for the advice...

ok, i pulled the pump today... nothing really looked unusual.. the wire terminal connectors on the inside of the pump ( where the four wires inside meet at the top of the assembly and connect to the terminals that then run through the very top of the fuel pump assembly to the connector) all looked to be ok, they were pretty black from corrosion i guess but all the physical connections were solid... (i still cant believe they just sit like that submerged in gasoline....with only a little plastic bearer to keep them from shorting...)
Anyways, I did get a better look at the inside of the connector at the top of the fuel pump assembly l(where the harness plugs into it)... there are little burn dark marks in the plastic where each of the four metal terminal pins meet the plastic in the inside of the connector.. ill post some pics tomm...
It would appear that these burn marks are in some way involved with my problem. I read in another post that these burns are caused by loose connections between the connectors, this causes ther terminals to heat up and burn the plastic.... seems logical.. but what my question is could my problem be somewhere in this top part of the fuel pump assembly, between outside where the connector plug is, then around the 90 degree bend and then down into inside part of the assemby where the wires on the inside of the assembly plug in?... because in that case i would need a whole new assembly (not just the pump).....
the other possible case is that the loose connection just burned out the actual pump somehow.... (or the pump just died of old age i guess...) im just hesitant to go buy a new pump only to find out my problem was in the wiring in the top part of the assembly and that i need to buy a whole new assembly (which is expensive b/c they all include pump obviously)...
like a said, ill post some pics tomm...
thanks

With an ohmmeter, you can test the fuel pump motor from the "outside" connector. If you read low ohm value, then the connection/pump should be good. What do you read?

You did get a spark for sure, then? Had a friend with a 96 V8 who experience pretty much the same symptoms apart from the fuel gauge. Turned out to be "the spider issue" and he easily fixed it by wiring a 12v feed directly to the coil! (contolled via the ignition so that it wont feed the coil constantly) Spider unit controls both fuel and ignition systems - so all kind off electrickery might act-up...? Ease off the fuel line valve on the injection rail to see if you do get any fuel upp the front off the car!

Sorry for useless info if you already determined a faulty pump...:)
