Apologies in advance. I am sure that this has been covered but I have searched and searched and not found real good information. I am reinstalling front cover and water pump and need advice on whether to use sealant with the gaskets. If so, what type of sealant is recommended and should I put it one or both sides of gasket. Also, my FC gasket appears to have a silicone bead on one side of it. Thanks

I'm pretty sure the consensus on Dweb is that you don't use sealant with new gaskets because that could cause them to fit incorrectly and leak. But I've heard of guys using sealant or "gasket maker" in place of gaskets.
Correct me if I'm wrong though...

dont use sealant, I usually use a little grease on the back side to hold it in position. the next guy to take it apart will hate you if you use sealant.

I didn't use a sealant on the waterpump, but I did use one on the front cover gasket. I used a very very thin layer of "Right Stuff". If you haven't used the stuff, buy it and try it. It is awesome stuff.

high tack adhesive is reccomended, normally right stuff tends to make the paper squeeze to the side, I have seen failure due to the second more than once.

If you use "Right Stuff", the gasket can displace. The sealant is slick when it's still wet and the gaskets slide. If you have the style gasket with the rubber molded in, no sealant is required. Some gasket adhesive will hold it in place, but they are designed for no sealant and more often than not will leak if you use some type of sealant. The only place you need a little sealant is where the front cover meets the oil pan. It's hard to get that perpendicular joint to seal without a thin bead of right stuff or RTV at that location.

I agree, could have not said it better my self.
sometimes doing this jobs too often you tend to forget how to put down the steps but once doing it, is second nature to grab the proper sealants and apply tehm as needed.
thanks for explaining it better Jeepfiend.
happy holidays.
