97 D1 Won't Start After Fried Coil Pack

Here's what happened: I thought my D1 (166k) might be running rough because of a bad coil. So I ordered a cheap new one to test that theory, and it actually did work much better. However, while I was out test driving it, I had to go through a big puddle to avoid oncoming traffic. A couple minutes later, the engine simply died. I pop the hood, and the coil I just put on has vomited its innards in a mess of melted plastic. I ordered a used rail of coils off ebay, installed, and now it won't start at all. So, my question is, was it the coil pack that killed ?the engine, if so, how do I fix, or did I splash water on something?

You could check the crank and camshaft sensors to make sure they aren't saturated. Cam is on front of water pump. 2 cranks on bottom of block.

Are you getting good spark with the new coil packs on all 8?

Let's head back to Luckenbach on this one.

Start at the CkPS. Do you have a signal while cranking?

Ideally one would have a graphing voltmeter or oscilloscope, but a DVM with a millivolt range will work as well.

On a GEMS engine, it's easiest to go to the ECU and find the applicable pins and probe from the comfort of being above the vehicle, but if we don't find a signal here, we'll have to climb beneath the truck so we'll start here as it will test the CkPS and the wiring up to the ECU (I had a guy who worked for me who had the hardest time understanding that concept).

Test and report back with your findings.
