I have read most if not all threads on exhaust work for Disco's. There are several unanswered question that I have. I don't think that they are repeats..... So

1) I have managed to pop a hole in the exhaust pipe just before the muffler and just after the connection point to the Y pipe from the engine.

2) My resonator, I assume that is the component just under the rear bumper, has lost 1-2 layers due to corrosion.

3) Most of the bolts are rusted on the attachment points

4) I do NOT want to spend cash on an expensive muffler as I have a newborn with an extensive diaper budget.

5) I am contemplating getting the Atlantic British exhaust assembly kit #NTC7426K.

6) I do not have any welding equipment to change size configuration or specific sections

My Questions:

1) Is the AB kit a reasonable sound / quality replacement
2) If all the bolts are rusted do I need to order / supply a stud kit to replace the muffler
3) Is this something that I can attempt on my own or do I pay a professional ( I have a local guy that will allow me to supply parts and he will do the work. Great Guy.)

As always, thanks in advance.

You can get a generic muffler at any exaust shop. I go to a Midas near me. You will probably need some bolts. No need to remove the y-pipe, so you won't need studs. You don't need the resonator. Cut it off. Don't waste money ordering exaust parts.

You could decide which exhaust smells worse. Then you could tell the newborn that due to budget cuts and reallocating the funds, there will be an additional charge for excessive pooping. Not working for the airlines, maybe it will work for you.

I like to extra charge for pooping. I think that might reconcile the budget. I could also charge for carry on items such as toys!

I dont like the idea of removing the resonator. Sometimes, not always I think the mfg does things the right way. Unless there is any other compelling reason to remove the resonator, besides cash, I will stick with it.

It sounds like the job can be done at home?

At your mom's
You can do it at home.
It is messy, uncomfortable work, and you won't know if you did it right until you drive 500 miles without annoying rattles and/or leaks.

Lots of PB blaster, and an air chisel will help.
And goggles. Safety goggles.
And ear plugs.

I like AB only because they send the (usually) right part quickly.
Anything AB sells should be found cheaper elsewhere.

I'll need to pay closer attention and try to hear the annoying drone at 2000 rpms. Haven't had a resonator for 4 years since paying stupid $$ for a prefitted stainless "kit". This was after a yearly exhaust patching session that never really did the trick.

Check the local NAPA for the pipes and resonator.
Can't hurt. The friggin muffler shop doesn't buy them from AB.

I cut mine off a few years ago and I have no drone. I put an extension pipe in its place to get the exhaust out from under the truck and all is well. Barely louder than stock and no negative aspects.

I hate working on anything on the underside for long periods of time. It's not the "being on my back the whole time" part that gets me. It wears out the arms quicker.
Anyway the resonators only purpose is to meet EPA noise requirements I believe. We just had a similar discussion in the Harley group as to why the bikes come from the factory with such quite pipes. Other than that, the resonator is dead weight. Just another thing to spend money on.

Wow the resonator discussion really got some traction. I might consider it now. If it is really dead weight.

I don't have an air chisel but I do have a crap load of PB Blaster as I reworked my diff lock that was frozen when I purchased the vehicle. O am assuming that if I break the rusty attachment bolts I can pick up replacements?

I looked at Napa and they only have 1 selection, a Bosal direct fit muffler. It was not as cheep as I was expecting.

I know AB is a bit more expensive, $269 for exhaust and resonator but if I can keep the stock sound and learn a bit I think that it might be a good compromise.

Opinions still welcome!

And thanks again!
