Can anyone give me the compressed length of the lower steering shaft on a '98 DI? I went to replace mine with a new one from BP (part# QME500040), but it's about an inch and half too long

That's the PN for just the ujoint, I'm talking about the whole assembly, which I have already purchased from BP, but it's about an inch and a half longer than the stock one I pulled, at 18.5" compressed.

QME500040 is the superseded number for the entire assembly

Thanks, PT. That's what I've got and it's too long, at 18.5" when compressed. The original is about 17" installed (thanks for double-checking that, hidesertdisco).

Maybe I just ended up with a bogus one??

Aftermarket, ordered from British Pacific. He said he checked another on the shelf and it's also 18.5" and that RRC and DI use that same part. What the heck? Why is my original shorter? There's no way this new part will fit.

Ive heard you can just get the lower joint (which is steel) from a readily available D2 shaft. Hell I think I have a shelf full of those things around here somewhere.

OE or aftermarket?

I've been replacing many of mine with the earlier models, steel and a little cheaper as well.

You probably shouldn't be doing that.

The aluminum one has a shear pin that the steel one doesnt. I suspect the non airbag models that used the steel one had a collapsable steering column.

Is the ujoint on backwards?

Hey Errant what was the fix on this issue just curious in case I ever have to order that part?

Not sure, yet. I've ordered another one from Will and will compare it to the original (as well as the one bought from BP). Hopefully this second shaft is correct.

OK, used shaft from Will is the right length (but not in any better shape than the one I need to replace). The new one purchased from BP is definitely WRONG. Anyone know of another source for a NEW lower steering shaft?

Rovers North has them, not cheap but I will be willing to bet its the right part.
Part #: RNS021
Price: $234.84 + Shipping

AB has a steering shaft but I don't think it is compatible its for a RRC 87-94, call Chip French 1-800-533-2210 he can tell you if they have what you need.
