A bad rap, er, wrap

Have other D1 owners noticed how little belt wrap the alternator has on the A/C equipped vehicles?

100A on that little contact patch? It seems the alternator is the first thing to slip if anything gets on the belt. At 100A I am surprised it turns in any condition other than a clean, dry belt.

So I am thinking about a longer belt and a static idler to get more wrap.

Have others noted this (or even care about it)?

I won't be deleting the A/C compressor to make the change.

are you sure the belt is on right? i've seen many put on wrong where only the top of the pulley make contact.

Well, I am betting that is the problem here. I looked this and thought it looked silly and surely a 100A alternator couldn't be driven that way.

I found the routing diagram for the belt. There is no doubt that mine is wrong. Funny, the service on this vehicle was done by a dealer near Irvine. Go figure.

Thanks for point me to an obvious answer without making me feel too stupid. :smilelol:

did you cut the fan shroud to make it fit that way?

Nope. It was this way when I bought the truck. Since the belts are well behind the fan there is plenty of room.

It seemed ok until the water pump let go (a little leak. The slightest moisture caused the alt to slip). So while replacing the WP I asked here then found the diagram in the workshop manual.

The top section of the shroud is missing from this truck so I do need to replace that.
