Jack Leitch and I went down to Hollister on Thursday and every thing was great until we came around a corner very slowly and abs kicked in letting the wheels roll we couldn't stop the next thing we know we were headed down the cliff

We hit a tree head on squaring use to the hill then we rolled twice and stop against a tree on it?s side

lucky for us we are both ok but unlucky for the his XD it may be totaled :( I or jack will post pics once there developed

jack is more lucky then me his seat belt broke on the first roll and he went a whole roll with out it
the bolt broke and the "fail safe" cable as well

has anyone heard of this happening

Dude I am sorry.

I had a similar thing happen to me with my ranger, I had to turn off the ignition and leave it in 1st and jump on the breaks to lock up the tires and stop my decent of a hill, SCARRY

That sucks.

Which trail were you on?

I had a similiar thing happen at Stoneyford in April. Going down a steep rocky hill, I panicked and hit the brakes instead of trusting the engine braking. ABS kicked in and I went careening down the hill. Luckily, I managed to stay on the trail until it leveled out.

Never heard of a seat belt failing....

Yikes !

 Glad to hear you guys are OK.

As my 96 aged, I would frequently find the ABS kicking in at the most unexpected times. After replacing the rotors (they were worn down), it seems to work much better, but I still remove the fuse when I'm going off road.

Sad indeed...

I feel bad for you guys... OTOH, _one_ steep descent on loose dirt taught me to pull the ABS fuse as soon as I leave the pavement. Since that _one_ descent happened to be down a 30-35 deg slope towards a tree, I know _exactly_ your feelings...

WOW!!!
Note to self: Next time on the trails...disconect that darn fuse, actually find it first, then disconec it.

Which fuse?

When archives are back up, you can flip through all the threads about ABS and a proper way to disable it.
I always pulled the fuse marked "ABS" in the main fuse block under the dashboard. Several people reported "Check Engine" light coming ON after this, but it has never happened to me.

sounds like a logical question, but when ABS lets you down for the 1st time, it takes extra smarts to overcome the shock (for the lack of a better word). Things are happening fast, so if you aren't used to grab the parking brake handle without looking at it, you won't have time.

I have a question... I received new rotors for my 96 disco, but they did not have the holes for the abs mechanism, can I install them W/O the abs?

Craig, that would make for an interesting thread.

I wonder what provision do the rotors have for the ABS mechanism... Always something new! :)

ok  I'm starting a new thread,
BTW I got the dimpled and slotted rottors acording to tire rack they were the proper ones, I got all 4 of them , none of them had the actual holes to hold the abs in the iner part of them
