ACE Pump Failure

My ACE pump pulley is giving me a lot of resistance and I am hearing a loud chirping coming from the pump, which makes me believe that a bearing is going out and it's about to blow. It has been doing this for a while. The pump has 76K on it.

Is the pulley supposed to have some resistance when you turn it?

Can I take the pulley off and replace the bearing or do I have to replace the whole pump?

Should all the pulley turn easily or should some of them have some resistance?

Thanks... if I don't fix this loud chirping soon, I'm gonna drop some dynamite under my hood. :banghead:

The pulley should have some resistance when turning by hand, it has kind of a soft notched feel to it. Not tight, but not free-wheeling either.

I don't have direct experience with the pump bearing, but a local mech who works on LRs here in town says the bearing is not easily serviceable. He does a complete replace, I guess for the obvious reasons.

I have a working pump that I just pulled off my truck, but it's got ~110K miles.

There is little to no chance of your being able to obtain the bearing, much less swap it out. The bearings in the DI PAS pump are made by INA and INA won't sell me a bearing, they say i belongs to ZF and to go to ZF to get it! I suspect similar W/R/T the ACE pump.

Then, the process of replacing would be horrendous as the bearings are tiny little rollers.

Either replace the pump or remove it and program the BCU to think it no longer has ACE.

yeah, you can easily put a non-ACE serp on it even leaving everything intact. I ran that way for a while until I just finally removed everything. I still haven't had my BCU updated yet, but I pulled the ACE fuse so I just have an amber light instead of the beeping red light.
