We are going to be in upstate NY for a few days in late June. Thinking about taking a detour on the way home through Adirondack State Park or over to Burlington, VT since we've never been that far north before!!

Suggestions?

Where upstate? You could take the road across the Moose River Plains area, 25 miles of dirt from Inlet to Indian lake.

We are going to Alex Bay (Thousand Islands) on Friday for a wedding on Saturday night.

Thinking about leaving early Sunday and taking the drive back, possibly Sunday night staying somewhere, to be home late afternoon Monday. Unfortunately, we both have to be back at work on Tuesday so we won't have a lot of time for exploring, hiking, etc. We want to see what it's like so maybe if we enjoy the area we will try to go back another time for a longer trip.

Haven't decided yet if we will just get a rental car and do the road-tourist thing or take one of our vehicles...

Depending on timing...we would probably enjoy camping that Sunday night and finding a little spot to fly-fish!

I'm going to look online for NY state fishing license information...

I live one town south of Burlington VT.
It is a great tourist town, great food, several breweries and easy access.
It is not particularly cheap.
Plenty to see and do as well, especially in the summer time.

Any questions please ask.

I am sure Dan knows what to do, but you can spend a week around Burlington easily. Renting sea kayaks in Lake Champlain (paddle out to the islands or even camp if you're up for it), visiting Shelburne Farm a must http://www.shelburnefarms.org/ , maybe even a ride up to Montreal, hike up Mt. Mansfield at Stowe (Shed Brewery too), Vermont Pub & Brewery in town, watch a show at Red Square in town or any number of other great things to do around this beautiful area.
The summer is always packed full of things to do up there.

.... hike up Mt. Mansfield at Stowe.....

If time is short(er), drive up. The Stowe Toll Road goes 9/10 of the way to the summit, with great views from the highest peak in Vermont. In ski season, the toll road doubles a ski trail, so check to see if it has opened to vehicular traffic. Approach Stowe from the north and drive through Hazen's Notch. (Rovers North is close by....) The toll road it cool, but it ain't cheap....

Cheers

Also, you may be in luck, depending on when in June you plan on coming. Every year, NYS has "Free Fishing Days" in which you can fish without a license. This year, they happen to be June 25 & 26. You can fish any legal body of water in NYS on those days. If its any other day, you can purchase a "one day" non-resident license at any local town hall/Wal-Mart/Gander Mountain for $15.

NYS DEC fishing info: http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html

Where to buy a license in the area you'll be: http://maps.google.com/?q=http://www.dec.ny.gov/maps/gmlianorth.kmz

Enjoy

Thanks for all the responses! Reading about the entire area makes me wish we had more time!

Erik-- the fishing info is great. That's the exact weekend we will be up there so we might take advantage both days! $15 a day is a good deal too and it's nice to support the local fish/wildlife.
I've been to niagara and it's gorgeous, but my husband hasn't. We both have never been to the eastern areas of NY or to VT.

I definitely want to get a taste of the park but don't want to add too many hours to our trip. I'll keep playing with the maps--keep the info coming please!

Saranac Lake area is awesome. Small mexican restaurant called casa del sol makes the best authentic mexican food and margaritas. A hike up St Regis mountain (just N of Saranac) is an awesome half day trek and you could do some fishing on upper st regis lake (big lake trout). I tend to stay away from the Lake Placid area as it is touristy from memorial day through labor day. Eric may want to check his map as buffalo is more than a 2 hr trip west from any where in the adirondack state park.

Thats gonna be tough. Alex Bay is way North-west of ADK park. I suppose you could take the road toward Tupper Lake, Saranac, Lake Placid area. Or drive a little south and take 28 across...thats a cool route. Plenty of lakes and cool towns along the way. Moose River plains is right off 28 (as Kevin Mentioned) and is a nice scenic dirt road. You can camp there too. Avoid Lake George as its tourist hell. If you must see Lake George, goto Bolton Landing instead.

Still planning our route...thinking we will leave early Sunday morning and explore routes 58/30/28 heading east/south through Adirondack SP. Then maybe stop in Cooperstown to see the National Baseball Hall of Fame since we will be so close! I'd like for Sunday to be insterstate-free!

Are there any nice places to stay between Cooperstown or Binghamton, NY and Hazleton, PA? We will jump back on I81 for the trip home Monday morning...

Thanks Sven! Cooperstown and surrounding area looks like a neat place to stop and explore and is still relatively "on the route" home.

As much as I want to get to Vermont I think we will need to do that on another trip directly. It will just add too much to our travel time with only 1.5 days to get home before work.
