i ordered a thermostat from nathan at discount rovers and it is a britpart aftermarket thermostat. when i took the old one out i noriced that it has a little vent hole at the top with a "jiggle pin". the new one i bought does not have the jiggle pin. is this a problem? do i need to get an oem with the jiggle pin?

if anyone knows the difference and has a recommendation as to what i should do, i would appreicate your reply. I am waiting to refill the coolant until i know whether or not i need to get a new thermostat or not.

Thermostat

While it is definitely desirable to go OEM>..I have installed 2 thermostats just like the one you have in the past year with no issues...both motors went another 400 miles before locking up..
All kidding aside...the thermostats you are talking about are perfectly fine and will not cause any harm.

I just drilled a small hole in thermostats like the one you are talking about. I was told if air is trapped in the system it might cause the engine to overheat. The holes allow air to pass through the thermostat so the fluid can contact the sensor and cause it to open. Drill a small hole (1/16") in the thermostat and you should be fine.

heres another question about the thermostat. after i was unsure about thenew thermostat i decided i would just test the old one and if it worked fine i woudl just reinstall it. so i boiled up a pan of water. to 88C aka 192F and dropped it in the thermostat opened up but only like 3/16" so to compare i dropped the aftermarket one in when it opened it opened up like 1/2" so to be safe i put the new one in i figured opening up more would be more beneficial to the flow of the fluids. am i right in thinking that? or is the oem one only supposed to open 3/16"? or was the old oem one just starting to crap out on me?

i took Landy for a test drive after i refilled the fluid and the engine heated up to normal temp and stayed there. i even did some pretty taxing step hill driving and the heat range stayed normal. I guess i am not really worried about not have the little hole in the thermostat but i will still keep my eye on it.

Hole

drill a 1/8? hole in the flange or just buy the one with the air bleed hole/jiggle pin. The hole is an air bleed ....
Jag used a similar set up on their vehicles... I beleive it was set up as a "self bleed" for the coolant system...

It will definitely make it easier to bleed the truck when you hook all back up...
