Alternator choices?

My alternator in my 1998 Discovery is making a bit of a grinding noise and suspect is on it's way out - I've been checking out replacements and have found a wide price range ($800-$150) - I could use some advise from any one with experience on what one I need to get the job done with out spending more that I really need - The DiscoWeb community has never let me down! - Thanks

I bought a rebuilt M&M from the local indy parts house, mebbe 150$. I don't recall if it came with the pulley.

A year or so later had to replace the voltage regulator ($40?).

So 2 1/2 yrs on the rebuild, 1 yr on the V Reg.
$200.

On thing to note - the book said my '97 has a serp belt with 7 ribs, all my pulleys were 6 ribs. Or vice versa. Anyway, pay attention and match the existing.

FYI- when my alternator went out I replaced it with a Range Rover Alt. Perfect fit and 20 more amps. Same price too.

Call Will and get a used one if your on a budget.
I recommend you stay away from Corporate-owned Parts Stores and their Reman Alts.
These are typically poor quality and fail within the year.
If you use your truck to run in deep water and mud, the remans will fail faster.

dont be foolish, drop the dime on quality.

these alts fly like bats from ozzy

if yer running a D1 you will need a D2 serp. belt also. they are pricey but well worth it. once you start the disco up you know you have all your power needs. i run 2 12" polks and a pretty loud system + 8 aux lamps so i have had worrys in the past about power.

now i can live worry free.

I had my Magneti Marelli alternator rebuilt back in October by a place near me that has a good rep for rebuilds. The price was right too. So far so good.

x2 on having it rebuilt. Had my 94 done for $45 and it is still going strong to this day.

Update for those reading - My goal was to replace the alternator with something decent but not to spend more than I needed to - I chose a rebuilt Bosch from Auto Parts Warehouse for $237+core - It shipped quick and out of the box it looked just like original one - I put her in this morning and everything fit perfect - If you hear no more from me on this subject, it's still working fine - Thanks

Man, for your sake, I hope you don't have any issues. Auto Parts Warehouse sucks. I ordered oxygen sensors from them-wrong parts and they argued with me that I didn't know what I was talking about. When I was parts manager at the mainly MB shop, I had to do a return on a catalytic converter. They fawked that up too!

Two strikes in two opportunities is too many for me.

I looked over my service records and it appears that it took two years for the original M&M rebuild to poop the bed.

With the voltage regulator, the brushes were also replaced. My "Rebuild" of the rebuilt unit is less than 20,000 miles old.

Time flies.
