I know that plenty of hunters use .300 Win Mags or .300 Weatherbys for Grizzly, but I've read that those are a little light. I just assumed that the .338 Win Mag would be perfect.
Obviously the loads being used makes a huge difference. A ballistic tip bullet is going to be worlds apart from a Barnes solid on bear.
If I'm ever going to be in bear country, I'll get a 375 H&H.
I think you are right on Mike. I'm all about 375 H&H. It will be my next rifle. I hope I can get Nosler to make me a custom one on their action. I want it field grade with safari sights.
I think 338 and 300 are light for huge bear but many have been shot with them. Like I said my father in law shot one with a 7 mag but he was abit crazy and crashed a lot of planes up there.
I think you need solids for bullets for big dangerous game. I do believe a 45-70 loaded right is an awesome stopper. 400 grns going 1900-200fps. I met a guide at the Dallas Safari Club from South Africa who shot a Rhino with a 45-70 guide gun and brought it down. His client made a high shot with a 375 and the Rhino ran. The guide shot twice at it going away and broke the spine. He then shot a third shot behind the shoulder to finish it. He had some great pics of it and swears by the guide gun for back up. The wealthy client was so impressed that he possed with the guide gun and Rhino.
