Pics to refresh my memory?

I don't want to cut my body but am willing to cut off my hitch if a 2" receiver can be integrated with a high degree of confidence in it's load ability. My stock bumper looks like a pretzel with no end caps...

I'm in for pics... I'd like to keep the stock hitch as it is integrated into the frame unlike the D2. I tow a small pop up with my D1 and I have never had much luck with bumper style hitches in the past.

I dont understand why you people want to cut all the metal out of the rear of a Disco for "clearance" just get a Defender-90

That's an awesome idea.... Let me sell my D1 and hit the lottery for the other $20 grand I'll need to make the deal.

Not to mention that Defenders bring the SUCK if you have more than 1 passenger and need to carry any gear at all for camping, etc.:p

This is true mine is already full when I go on trips. I cant imagine fitting all my shit into a d90..

Seems I may need to scrape together my pennies for a new rear bumper sooner than I had planned. A suicidal deer jumped into my driver side, and got something (antler?) caught in the bumper a while back. But, just checked the other day, and the cracks in the stock bumper have grown.

So, I'm curious if you'll be doing DII bumpers as well as the DI bumpers? If yes, I may well get one for my DII.

Yes, still doing the DII's. THis thread was hijacked by impatient DI owners :)bigok: ), but becasue these group buys are based on materials purchased, gettings a couple of DII orders is fine.

Will work on proto-typing the D1 this Friday.:applause:

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.

As far as the original post goes, exactly how many DII bumpers do I have commitments for?

OK guys, I had a DI XD in the shop and took the rear bumper off. I studied it from every angle for around 90 minutes and came to the conclusion that.............................there is no practical way to make a bumper that carries on the design and function of my DII bumper for a DI.

Too many things are different. Because the frame and crossmember extend beyond the body, the only way to even come close is to cut off the rear 2/3's of the crossmember and frame section, plate it, and then you still have to figure out how to attach the bumper.

For those type of modifications to be done, you will either pay a shop dearly for it (probably as much as the bumper cost), or do it yourself. If you could do that yourself, then you have the skills to make your own bumper.

I don't like turning down orders, but the only practical way to make a steel rear bumper for the DI is to basically do the same thing that everyone else is, and I'm not a big fan of copying anyone else's design.

Sorry guys, it's just not practical as my design would be anything but a bolt-on, and because of the expense or skills necessary, my market would be very limited, not making it worth my while.

Thanks for all of your support though!

Crap.
I still believe it can be done, maybe it wouldn't mirror your D2 design though.
Guess its time to pull the bumper off my parts D1 and get to work.

Oh, it CAN be done, just not in the same style of my DII - Minimalistic and near bullet-proof. I could easily design a bent-plate style bumper, but you wouldn't gain anything over the competition without seriously modifying the rear of your frame and crossmember - which makes for a very difficult sale to the average wheeler that doesn't have a shop to work in.

Believe me, I WANTED to come on here and say I had a prototype ready, but it just isn't feasible given the DI's design.

Not to be a PITA but doesn't the D2 design require welding to be done by the customer before install? And fender cutting? I'm just saying taking a pneumatic cut off wheel, angle grinder, or sawzall to do a little trimming of the frame horns and crossmember isn't a huge deal. Most people can handle cutting such things moreso than they can welding.
Just sayin'. ;)
