Anyone else think $700 for a CDL kit is a little bit outrageous?

Erik,
700USD is a lot for the CDL kit, but... I paid nearly USD 2,000 to have it installed by a dealer who "did not know" that a kit existed, ordered the parts separately (much more expensive), and took 18 hours to assemble it! (well it was a '04 non-CDL version for Spain).

The cost depends on if your truck has the CDL actuator. If it does, you will need the simple kit (lever, bracket and cable, as illustrated in the images). If your truck does not have the CDL actuator, you will need the complete kit, about $700 in ashcroft.

Nevertheless, the CDL kit fitting is truly recommended. The truck's behaviour is totally transformed, especially in snow (i have two D2, both CDL fitted).

Hope that helps

Regards,
Robert

instead of my previous idea of a pto cable,i decided to go with a solid core choke cable. i will try to post some pics of the install. hopfully i'll get started on it this weekend. it will not be as nice as the factory linkage, but it should be a reliable solution that is clean, and cheap.

rip. make your own by making a socket extention drill a hole in the dash and connect it on the nut and put a hand lever on the socket extention. Check the tech forum also has a good example.

I'd love to see some pics of the install and set up itself when you get a chance.

if the dealer gets done with my coolant leak today i will start on th t-case and cable install tomorrow morning. i'll try to have some pics up as soon as i'm done. so far this is a low budget project. so far 200$ for t-case,7.00$+shipping for cable, and @15.00$ for bracket metal and hardwear.

If you guys are on a budget like me but still wants the OEM look, just get a D1 tcase shifter assembly. I believe the installation instructions are in the Tech section of EE's site. I got mine from here Roverlandparts.com

Make sure to call them to verify that you want the shifter with the CDL. Anyhow, I'll wait until the prices for the cable actuated shifter goes further down 'til then I'll get the most out of my D1 Tcase shifter.

PS
I emailed discoparts.com in the UK and inquired about their shipping rates specifically to California. He responded with a quote of 25 Brit Pounds (BP). So I added the cost of the genuine LR cable actuated CDL which was listed at 195 BP for a total of 220 BP, which when converted to the current exchange rate was roughly around $383 USD and some change. I've never dealt with them before so I can't really attest to how their business practice(s) are. I just thought I'd try their site that was posted a while back in this thread.

I have toyed with the same cable idea in the past. Being from Wilmington you are probably all to familiar with boating. I was thinking of a cable actuated system but using a more durable and stronger outboard motor cable.

But Mike- it's not that the vendors don't want to get those, it's that L.R. won't sell them separately. If Ashcroft can split up a kit and give you the ends, that's great. I'm sure he's got all those little bits and he can sell the rest of the parts since he's a transmission shop, but a retailer who carries the kit can't split kits up to supply little parts that only come with the rest of the kit. You make it sound like the US retailers suck- we don't have access to what you needed. There's a difference between customer service and supply chain problems.

Mike,

First of all we did respond and told you we didn't have the part, we told you we only had the full kits. As Steve mentioned we don't have access to the part you needed. Many people know us on this board and other boards and know that we will try to help you (or anyone else) out if we could.

You recently placed an order with us for some parts and our shopping cart program overcharged you for shipping costs, we immediately contacted you and informed you we would be sending you a check for the overpayment.

So what did we do wrong????

So John and Steve you are saying the only way that you can get these parts is to buy the whole thing? What happens when someone brakes something? Do they have to buy the whole thing again?

Yes.

There are *tons* of parts for LR that come only in complete assemblies.. the only way you can go about buying the seperate part is to find a used-parts dealer or someone parting out a truck and hope they'll break up the assembly for you.

I had the same problem with LR, My CDL stopped working because at the end of the cable where it connets was missing a pin and the washer. They said I would have to order several units. I have also checked with salvage yards they will not break up the part.
So now I will have to bite the bullet and by a whole new CDL kit...

Why not fabricate? A dremel and accesories has to be cheaper, plus at the end of the day you still have the dremel tool.

Food for thought.
