so how terrible would it be in CO? it is terrible and slow now with stock gears and 32's... but it will do 75 on the mostly flats. here in tx, it is better, maybe about the same cause the air is thicker....

I guess it just depends on what you think is bad. It's a trade off on what is more important to you. The advantage on the trail no way outweighs the advantage on the street. With 33x10.50s I will go pretty much anywhere a guy will with 35's but will have a much better time on the road. You just have to ask yourself what is important. To me they're not worth it at all unless the truck lives on the trail.

I had the stock 3.54 gearing when I put 32's on my daily driver D1 here in Colorado and it was so slow and sluggish I could not go anywhere even on a slight highway grade. When I put in 4.11's the change with 32" tires was tremendous on road and off. Offroad I had much better engine braking with the 4.11 than the stock gearing. I'm very glad I put in the lower gearing. If I was to get a bigger lift and put on 33 or 35's I would definitely gear lower yet. Probably 4.75's. You need it on the mountainous western highways otherwise you are a real turtle.

i have a D2. i run 4.10 up front and 4.11 in the rear. detroit rear with arb front. 36" bias tsl's. i run about 70-80 mph (highway) to trails from an hour to 6 or 7 hours no problem. don't have problems off road either.
taller gears also mean less contact area, so keep that in mind.
it's also my daily driver.

I don't know if a lot of people do this, but why not put a lower ratio high range gear set in the transfer box and add an underdrive or lower gearset for the low range as well (assuming they are available)? I would think the the 3:54's would be strong enough, since the carrier seems to be the weak point.

Jimmy, We looked into this a few years ago prior to my 4:11's in the red truck - prices may have come down but back then it was less expensive to gear two diffs with set-up kits than it was to get the high and low gears for the transfer case.

Maybe the prices have come down - I haven;t check into this recently but I always thought keeping stock diff gearing and working the transfercase would have been the trick.

none of your fucking business
Alright guys, I know 4.10 - 4.12 is the standard for 33's.

Tell me why I shouldn't get 4.37's? I don't do a ton of highway driving.

I have a daily driver so Im not worried about this thing not being able to go fast at a low RPM. Ill just drive like a grandmother.

Really, is there any reason not to go with 4.37's with 33's?

fuckin L, i drive my D2 every day, 4.11rear detroit, 4.10ARB front, 36" tsl's. taller gears have less surface face. with 33's you would be fine with 4.10's

If you're primary use will be trail, then go 4.88's. I had them with 35's and they were great. With the LR's lower, high and low range LT230, then the 4.11's would be a good compromise between street and off road.

Ok ...so you had 4.88's in rover diffs?

I call bullshit

no my bet is he had 4.88's in another truck with a 1 to 1 high range.

But since most rovers have a 1.22 high range then the stock 3.54 gears act like 4.31 gears in say a jeep and the 4.11 rovers gears act like 4.97 gears.

So adding "I had 4.88 gears" if it was in another truck is really just garbage information that does not add any value.

Now Post added he has 4.88 gears as well but we know he is running on a toy conversion with a rover LT230 so his information actually contributes to the subject of the thread.

im between 33"s and 35"s still......
need to run 75mph on the highway.
Power was a little low in the mountains with 235's and 3.54's. i mean it wasnt like terrible, but passing on 2 lanes was kinda sucky. truck was overloaded with gear and the rack was on and had some stuff on it, nothing sticking up but it was on there none the less... so running lighter will help...

got wheels, so the time for tires is coming pretty quickly....

Couldn't you just get lower gears for the high range in the transfer box? I've got 36's with 4:10's on my Range Rover and it does fine on the rocks. I haven't run into a situation yet where I've really needed lower gears. Sure, they'd be nice to have, but not that necessary. If I wanted to lower the low range I'd buy an underdrive.

I'm currently running on 33s with 4.43s. On hwy I do 75 mph easy at 3300 rpm. The tach is a little busy but with the big heavy KM2s and extra weight of armor and gear it works for me. I like that I can speed up for a lane change rather than slow down to get behind the other cars.

What's your rpm on the highway? 3300Seems way to high.

I didn't think the km2 was that heavy of a tire compared to others...

Its been so long since I've driven on the highway I can't even remember. I Trailer it when I go wheeling so it doesn't see the highway much.

35s with stock gearing, going nowhere fast. I need to regear, and I will go more than 4.10, probably 4.88. Mine is not a daily driver.
