Crap. this is funny.
We forget how cumbersome those tasks were, and how the PC (and the GUI, in particular) revolutionized the way we work. It really did take a staff of ten to do what I do in a hour. Remember typing pools (see movie 9 to 5)?

To me, that was Jobs' greatest contribution - bringing the GUI and the mouse to computing. Everyone will talk about the iStuff, but those were the real revolutions in how we use computers.

Our company still has some non-GUI programs and they are just so hard to navigate and use (ever see airline employees at the ticket counter - takes forever).

I see Jobsmost impressive feat as envisioning a new business model for music industry and then executing on that. I am curious how far he was looking into the future with that product. Did he always envision itunes from the conception of the ipod? Did he always see touch screen, then phones? I'm not sure if we will ever know, but I am very curious.

Its so easy to look at the historical progression and connect the dots. But it is beyond difficult to envision the whole thing and then execute on that vision. To the extent that Apple did that is kind of crazy.

I agree iTunes made a new business model for the music industry, but the advent of the PC (based on the mouse and the GUI) changed ALL industries and computing. It was nothing short of Ford bringing cars to the masses.

I'd say, anyone younger than 30 would think all computers came with a GUI, and forget what a command prompt is.

Funny you should bring this up.
iTunes is a flaming piece of shit.
Let me repeat it.
iTunes is a flaming piece of shit.
I would never, ever, use that piece of software if I could get the iPod my kids gave me for my birthday play the songs (which are on it!) without iTunes importing it.
The fucking iTunes just wiped out 3GB worth of music - with the only action on my part being connecting the iPod to USB port so I could charge the battery.

I would not purchase an Apple computer simply because I _suspect_ the other Apple s/w is just as much of annoying I-know-it-better-than-you shit.

I leave the ipod / i tunes to my son

but there is free software to recover the files,

iPods don't permanently erase a file once it has been deleted or removed from the hard drive; instead they remove the file from the drive and list its space as available and re-usable space. Therefore until that space is overwritten by new data your songs and files are still there and can be recovered!

I know there are ways and means to do it. The simplest is to dance on the eggshells around the library I have at my home computer to make sure neigher gets fucked up more than it is.
But the default settings of iTunes are fucking ridiculous.
I could probably hack my way around Apple OS - but why should I?

I can't relate to your trouble. I just plug my ipod in and go about my business it always works. I am no longer required to understand how it works, like with PC.
