ARB bumper protection Question

I think you will find that ARB has been around for a long time and have satisfied customers around the world. You can actually have some of their bumpers added as original equipment from the dealer in some locations...

Also if you know anything about Euro standards as well as Australian road standards to be certified for the road they have to meet strict crash and protection standards. they are also designed and tested to work in conjunction with your original equipment safety gear...

Feel free however not to like them, but to be intellectually honest you cannot question their mfg or safety standards...

Its a great medium to light duty bumper, but most of the Euro/Austalian trucks running ARB bull bars use separate recovery points bolted to the frame.

They will work just fine in a car accident which makes them useless for serious offroading.

I still dont think you have anything to worry about when it comes to your radiator. As mentioned I would address your lack of diff cover before worrying about a skid plate..

I'd be more worried about punching a hole in that unprotected differential than an errant shaped rock slicing open your radiator but what the hell do I know I've never owned a Nissan or been in the Army

i dont really have a fear of a stationary rock getting to the radiator because of the large stearing protection bar. i am more concerned about the loose rock like on the haul road or some of the roads in Colorado or the sticks or wood chunks on the beaches or like in Baja...

If you knew anything about Euro standards you'd know they banned manufacturers(like Land Rover) from offering stout protection on their vehicles years ago

yes they did it in 2001 because of the additional injuries they cause to pedestrians...

look close at the front plate on the Nissan, Euro tag from Denmark...

They still sell ARB bumpers in Europe, they just dont have the grill and headlight loops...

Euro tags, so cultured, even though every lowered VW has them.

The bottom line is, none of us are trying to benefit from you avoiding ARB. You just need to accept that you're chasing a non-issue. There are several other things to worry about.

The Diff looked pretty stout for my kind of over-landing. is this a know issue and something i should budget for? the bolt on ones seem fairly inexpensive and easy to fit.

If you would care to learn anything about Rovers you'd know the diff covers are an area in need of basic protection. You can put some diff guards on the list after roof tents and Chinese LED light bars for "your kind of over-landing"

Not a fan of the RTT Tent... When you get a little age and mileage on you climbing a ladder to go to sleep does not fit in my plans. in a good year i will camp about 35-40 nights a year. I have become a big fan of the cot and the ground tent or our trailer if my wife comes.

I am a pretty big fan of LED lighting as it is low power draw and way out in the woods a little light, if you are going to be there a few days, is a good thing. With the Solar panels and second battery we can stay out till we run out of
water... or beer, or in my wife's case wine.

As for Diff guards, is there a good value for money variety you recommend? Believe it or not I am actually here to gather information which is why i started this thread by asking a question. Sadly the actual noise to help ratio in this group is high it seems...

I hear sometimes an errant penis can slap a radiator and knock a hole in it. The penis is usually from the Subaru driver in front of you on the "trail"... and no Subaru drivers do not have penis's big enough to hit the vehicle behind them...their penis's literally fall off and slap radiators as they bounce on the "trail".

BTW, my current plan is 2 inch lift with 235/85/r16 tires. Most likely BFG KO2's or the Cooper AT3's. I like OME lift as i have used their gear on a few builds in the past and they represent in my experience good value for money.

I corrected the 3 Amigos i got as a gift with purchase when i got the truck a few months ago. I was informed that an upgraded front Drive shaft was a plus as well which i have sourced and will replace soon. I have added new fuel pump to replace the leaking one. I have replaced bad AC fan and clutch fan as well as all the hoses and radiator fittings. Truck came with new Radiator and water pump which my Rover Technian friend confirms as well and new head gaskets, and valve cover gaskets.

I am debating the factory roof rack/bar removal as like the old LR look because i had a Santanna when i was young (amazing what you can find on the lemon lot on a military base). I actually asked this question before but got no real response about roof racks. I see a ton of Disco's with them almost never see anyone carrying anything. To paraphrase Howski, that must be the Chinese light bar of the Disco world. Because i likely will use this truck only to drive to work, because it is a hoot to drive, and to camp within 3 to 500 miles with just me and the dog i am not sure i need to roof rack storage area. Having lived out of ruck sack in the Army and out of two 36 liter panniers traveling the US by motorcycle i am hoping i can come up with a load plan that keeps me from needing a roof rack (truth in lending time, i think the full roof rack looks cool) but being an old dude i dont have to worry about looking cool.

Given that, what besides supplemental Diff protection do you think i need since you are confident that huge hole in front of the radiator behind the bumper is not an issue. BTW i will fab up a covering for it, i was just hoping to get ideas of what others might have done.

WOW, penis jokes... not heard those since my children passed through puberty. Wow, you are the real deal, Disco God and Subaru driver penis size expert. Hard to keep your hand around all that information to stay current huh?

There is lots of good information here, and lots of knowledgeable people.
But this isnt the place for thin skin and stupid questions.
Bullshit gets called out quick here. Again, most of the guys that chime in here have been around for while and know what they are talking about. Unlike other forums where you get bad advice from people with little to no experience with Rovers.

The driveshaft should be your #1 priority. Its a ticking time bomb.. Second I would switch to a 180 Tstat. These trucks run way too warm with the stock thermostat. You can get an OEM 180 thermostat from a TD5.

OME is a good choice for only a 2" lift.

Take out your back seats and you will have plenty of space. No need for a roof rack.

The fact that no one has any ideas for covering it up suggests its a non issue. These trucks have been around for a while now.. any and all flaws are well known by now.

Disco God - no, but i bet you can do mean Hustle dance judging by your music choice.

I will say that I have been wheeling my Disco (the same one) for 13 years and I know a lot about the vehicle.

As to the Subaru penis size expert...no one can call themselves that because most Subaru drivers have dry vaginas... just the one in front of you on the trail has a penis (however they have breasts too which is weird)

I dont have thin skin, in fact it cracks me up when i read some of the post. You guys are not even close to being people that I hold in high esteem and could hurt me with you quips. I also know that to find the nugget of wisdom some time you have to deal with a lot of just common rocks.

I am not from the snow flake generation...

WOW, 13 years... impressive. you actually ever leave the South East United states? How many miles you have on your disco you have had for 13 years?

It does seem like you talk about Penis a lot btw, how long you been playing with those?

i would agree on the Drive shaft which is why i purchased one. I am fortunate to have a Master Land rover tech friend with 20 plus years of experience who pointed it out and pointed me to pictures of the mayhem it causes. I also have a really good functioning cooling system now after refreshing it all (also confirmed by my bud). There are a shit load of hoses and small plastic tubes when you replace all of them. i miss the good old days, top radiator hose bottom radiator hose.

I kind of need to keep the back seat but i will take that under advisement. I have looked at a ton of images from people who use the Disco as an overland vehicle. It does seem like it is capable of being the ultimate overlander for two. The back area is just a great blank canvas.

Long range i am looking at getting a bud in the UK to get me 300tdi front clip from disco 1 and implant it in my Disco 2.

I actually bought the Disco for two reasons. When i was a late teen early 20's person i loved the Camel Trophy stuff and now my kids are grown and gone i wanted a truck that i can work on. With the Disco i look at the truck and it is the stuff i am familiar with and looks like a truck not the plastic motor of a hot wheels car.
