I came across this the other day:

Note where the by-pass valve is located in the expensive Mobil1 and K&N filters.
I've always trusted the Wix quality. Looks like the trust is warranted.

I also use Baldwin B2's and was thinking about cutting one open to check, but this video shows their bypass valve is also well placed.

Interesting. I'm no expert but it does not seem to make much sense to put the drain valve at the top of the filter?

I have always been a big fan of Wix filters though I do run a Mobil 1 filter on my track/DD car, I think I may be changing to Wix on this one too.

Though I do like clear cut evidence showing that a nearly 300% price premium doesn't always mean better quality.

I agree 100%.
Price does not always mean better quality.

K&N are very over-rated in my view, they do nothing for a standard car that the LR parts won't do, and many a MAF has been destroyed by people washing K&N filters in petrol and putting them back on the car without properly drying them.

LR oil filters aren't expensive, we use genuine always, but might be expensive in the NAS market.

The only thing we do differently is to fit Champion Double Platinum plugs, as we run on LPG and they work better than 'standard' plugs.

Do you know if the Genuine are still made by Cooper? They were the last I heard. If they are, I have some Coopers on the shelf and might cut one open to see how they are constructed. Or you could next time you change oil so I don't have to sacrifice a new filter. :D
I'm curious where the by-pass valve is located and what the anti-drain back valve is made of.

I've been running the Mobil 1 301 filter for a while now. Get's the job done but it is pricey. I think im going to go with Napa gold or the wix filter next time.

I've switched from rotella to mobil 1 delvac though. Pretty good oil, keeps the engine quite and the design of the jug is nice as it helps keeps the job clean.

That would be good info on the genuine. Is it a Cooper or genuine you're removing soon? Comparing the two might be a good clue whether Cooper actually makes the Land Rover oil filter.

I just remembered I have a new Cooper still sitting on a shelf that got smashed when an engine rolled off a trailer. I'll open it up.

Most branded filters are good, as they have a reputation to protect.

The ones top watch out for are the cheaper unbranded ones that are obviously too cheap to be true, and they can usually be identified by cheap finishing on the top crimp joint and the machining of the attachment thread and the oil holes in the top plate. The top plate is also thinner on the cheaper filters, leading to distortion when screwed up tight and possible loosening.

We have cut some of these open in the past and found almost nothing inside.

You would think, but from the ones in the OP link, few are.
I cut open a Cooper the other day. The by-pass is the dome end and they appear to have a nitrile anti-drain back.

I've had a quick look at a genuine ERR3340 V8 filter.

The relief valve is at the domed end, the anti-drain flap is white silicon rubber as far as I can tell.

The attachment thread is machined, not rolled and is finished properly with no burrs.

15 flats for removal.

The centre tube is a perforated steel tube.
