Atlantic British oil pump

I have a 2001 d2 with about 130k on it. Just this weekend it stated making a lot of noise on start up like a dry start. The oil pressure light is turning off in a normal amount of time. the dry start noise lasts about 5 seconds and then once the engine is running and warm everything is normal. I noticed that the front cover is leaking a bit and my oil level is just the slightest bit low. I am going to change the front cover and oil pan gasket and was thinking with the noise and mileage that replacing the oil pump itself would be a good idea. I see Atlantic British has these pump gears for sale for $100 which is a lot better than $500+ for the entire front cover assembly. Does anyone have any experience with this part from ab, good or bad? Thanks and any input you guys have on this is appreciated.

Do not think it is an oil pressure problem. But I could be wrong, can you explain further or even record the noise you are hearing on a cold start up? Do not buy the part yet, just a thought.

I had this same issue before. I don't want to alarm you but in my case it turned out to be a bad rod bearing that scored the crank beyond repair. Rattle at start-up then sound good after a couple seconds. An oil pressure test will validate your pressure question for much less than a set of gears and gaskets (and coolant/oil). I hope yours is not what mine was.

Oil running back into the sump overnight, takes a little while to pick up again in the morning.

Keep the oil level in the sump up to the top and park facing downhill if possible, that helps a bit.

Oil grade affects it as well, using 10W-40 improves the situation.

Oh I plan on doing further diagnosis to see what is actually causing the nose just don't have the time yet. This is not my DD so is not an emergency. I'm topping up the oil today and will try parking facing downhill later today. I definitely need to take the front cover off to put on a new gasket and figured while I was there why not replace the oil pump with 130k miles on it. I hope it's not a bearing but I will see and let you know. I'm not looking to replace the pump as part of trying to figure the noise out, just as a " while I'm in there why not freshen everything up" attitude

You could try a new oil filter (possible different brand). The anti-drain back valve in the filter could be shot/not working. I would get that with the Mobil 1's, when she sat for awhile. switched to a WIX filter and never had the problem again. but that's me.

just a cheap thought.

The filter is OEM. I added oil tonight and started it. Had a little bit of extra noise but it went away quicker. It took a quart and a half. The true test will be tomorrow morning, i will start it before work and see how it sounds

Ok so an update..I aded 1.5 qts of oil, which brought the level up to the proper amount, and started the truck, found the noise to be there just a second or 2 and then run fine. I allowed the truck to idle for about 15 minutes and found everything to be running well. I shut it down and before i left for work this morning I started it up and found there was no noise at all like there was before, so the noise was just due to low oil level. the low oil level is from the leak from the front timing cover and the oil pan, so atleast ive made headway and figuring out where the noise was from and what was causing it and its not catastrophic (i hope so far). So I'm going to order parts to fix the leak this week. No one has any experience with the atlantic british oil pump?

Im looking for any feedback as to the reliability of this part? Any issues? Any rave reviews? Anyone used it at all? I figure if im taking the front cover off a truck with 130k miles and the pump is right there why not change it..especially for $100

I've got that kit. I haven't used it yet, I just got it because the price on the gears was going up everywhere.

I assume all of the pump gears from the different vendors are the same. I put a set of gears from British Pacific in my d1. Had no issues.

Great to hear! When I did mine I got it from BP Utah and works fine. Remember to observe which way the chamfered edge of the gears go and inspect the relief piston while your in there. Might as well change out the crank seal as well. RAVE steps you right through it (except don't remove the block plugs when draining the coolant).

I would not buy a anything from them, the are pompous and rude, But if you have solved you problem good. I just do not think highly of roverparts . Buy your parts from Tillery and there are many others who are reputable people who sell parts on this blog. Just giving you a heads up.

One of the issues with fitting just the gear set is that it's wear on the alloy housing, more than wear on the gear set. The outer diameter hardly wears, the steel backing plate hardly wears, it's the internal face with the inlet and outlet ports that wears most.

No quick fix, short of re-machining the housing and packing out on the steel plate side or taking that face down to match.

Or just fit a new cover assy.

i just removed a 78k gear set and replaced. there was no discernible wear on the gear set but the alloy face had noticeable wear/markings. i buttoned it back up...all is well ;)

atlantic british will sell you defects and tell you that the cap on the coolant expansion tank is "...supposed to be loose". Now I can't even get them to make it right by overnighting a replacement cap that fits properly...last purchase, first small claim...

And this my friends is why you should buy from me.

I didn't stay at Holiday Inn last night, but I do own Rovers and quite often dry-fit parts before shipping to ensure correct fitment.

I don't know that I have denied a warranty claim yet, but I have replaced a radiator under warranty even though my vendor did not do so for me.

Yeah, I know, I'm slow, both my son and I drop the ball sometimes, but I've only had one credit card chargeback and most folks seem pleased.

We've used one of our new front covers up on Philip's engine, leaving the other spare for mine when I get around to it.

The gear sets were not sold as a spare by LR, they came on the market when there was a demand for them, LR will only sell you a complete front cover.

The timing cover is made by Hobourn-Eaton at Rochester in Kent, I don't know if they started the after-market supply of the gear sets.

As I said earlier, wear on the aluminium (aluminum) housing is the main source of excess clearance, the gear set itself doesn't seem to wear significantly.
