Avoid used Freelander?

With LR's supply of the 2005 and Pre- engines drying/dried up, would it be a major issue that engine replacement parts will be hard to get in the long-run?

Its wasn't just a Freelander engine, it was used in many other rover vehicles as well. Parts availability should be good until LR USA discontinues support for the vehicle

Buy through the internet from the rest of the world. There are other places outside the USA that you can get parts from. Think globally

Arthur, do not buy a freelander. Trust me on this one. I know you and you are very good with fixing RRC/Disco stuff but there is no way you could replace a trans in a freebie and that is their real issue.

My freelander had its transmission replaced at 30k and just recently the engine at 45k.

The engine is a Rover KV6 and the transmisson is a Jatco 5 speed.

As with all newer Land Rovers, I wouldn't own one without a warranty.

someone kick my butt for even thinking about this, but how about the '04's? shouldn't they have ironed out the transmission problem by the time these came out? i really dig the looks on this one and would like to add it to the LR fleet as a daily driver, but not if everyone here recommends against it. aren't they basically a better looking ford escape?

FWIW Ricardo Engineering, Shoreham, England, was hired by SAIC to further develop the KV6 which is going into the SAIC Rover 75. A number of Longbridge/Powertrain engineers were hired to assist the process at Ricardo

Avoid new ones too.

Dumb ass comment given that there are no new ones in the US.

the 2007 model when they get here bare no relation to the original product. The latter was great as a Td4 diesel or 1.8 petrol. The six never made it for me

I sold my '02 FL to get an '04 Disco. It was more for space and modification reasons that I changed vehicles. My FL had the transmission replaced under warranty, and was otherwise quite reliable. It was fairly capable off-roading, but no good in the big rocks or deep ruts. (Do not confuse 'fairly capable' with the capabilities of a modded D90.) My FL was at the end of it's modifications without going to custom stuff, lots of fabricating, etc.

I think it is a bit of a lucky draw to see what each particular Freelander will turn out like. It may be like that with all LRs, but the Freelander in particular seemed to be very hit-or-miss.

where i'm at right now, duh...
I worked at the dealer for a few years, and the freelander was hated by most, if not all. I myself don't even like calling it a Rover.....

For the type of vehicle it is, you can get something else that is far more reliable and better on gas, etc....

We had a Freebie for almost 18 months ... until SWMBO found the D90.

It was an ok car for that period, but I'd swear it was in the dealer for repair four or five times.

You'd have a hard time getting me to bid a dollar on one. Once it followed me home, I'd feel some need to keep the blasted thing running ... doesn't sound like any fun to me.

Yeah, it's her "daily driver" that gets out of the garage once a week at the outside!

I had seen it for sale here in town ... she's out running around town one day and calls me ... "What's this red Defender with the white roof?"

me: "Its a '97 SW, so its an automatic." (knowing she doesn't drive a stick)

her: "I think we should get it."

me: Thud ... falls off chair

It's not exactly engouraged that I get it dirty ;)

Great gal, this one.
