I'd assume drive a honda crv than drive the FL. Why take on all the Land rover problems with none of the benfits?

is a 95 Range more capable off road than a d2?? stock?

how about when you compare both with coils and a 2" rte lift, all other things stock?

I guess I must have gotten a good one, then. SWMBO got an 02 FL, still drives it every day and we have not had any issues to speak of with it.......... Haven't done anything except normal maintenance so far.........

Here's a stupid question:
My wife decided she needed a FL (we did get a warranty)... Now for maintenance, how do I lubricate the wheel centers?
I was told the 84k maintenance was $353 from the dealer, so I figure I'll do the bulk of it and have valvoline change the oil.
Anyone know how to lubricate the wheel centers?

One more question: The FL overheats, temporarily, then returns to normal. It's done it three times, but returns to normal seconds later. It also produces an odor as if it actually is overheating.

I'm open for suggestions one this!

Be careful about doing that service yourself and read the fine print in that warranty. People have been rejected warranty claims on things like a transmission because they didnt have the scheduled service done by LR or a place that offically documented the service. You saying you did it wont cut it.

As for your overheating, from my own experiance, that was the begining of the end for my engine. Pay the $353 and have the dealer do (and more importantly document that it was done) and then have them start trouble shooting the overheating.

The cylinder sleeves are epoxied in place. What you're describing is the first step before you find more coolant than oil in the sump.

Any day now, your change engine light will be illuminated.

At least they had the foresight to equip the vehicle with a change engine light!!

Any idea about the lubricating of the wheel centers?

From the FSM:

MAINTENANCE

Road Wheels
Remove
1. Loosen wheel nuts. Raise vehicle for wheel
free condition and remove the wheel nuts.
2. Mark the wheel to stud relationship to ensure
that the wheels are refitted in the same
orientation.
Refit
1. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to
wheel hub centre.
2. Refit wheels to original hub position.
NOTE: When refitting road wheel nuts, do not
overtighten using powered tools. Ensure the
wheel nuts are correctly torqued in the correct
sequence.
3. Tighten wheel nuts to 115 Nm (85 lbf.ft).

Arthur, do not buy a freelander. Trust me on this one. I know you and you are very good with fixing RRC/Disco stuff but there is no way you could replace a trans in a freebie and that is their real issue.

The transmission in the Freelander is a known weakling. It's made by JATCO, and some of the earlier Nissan Pathfinder 4x4's JATCO transmissions and those were weak as well.

my freelander has been in the shop for over three weeks. the jatco took a crap at 75,000 miles.

luckily i have an extended warranty so i'm covered, but it sucks waiting around for a month for it to be fixed. i'm going to sell the piece of crap as soon as it's fixed even though i still owe more than i'll get for it.

good thing i still have my disco.

Also used in many current production Jags. Also suffers same failure frequency for the Jags. Some claim the "Drum" is cracked during assembly and it's only a matter of time before it completely fails.

On mine, the thermostat coupler was leaking and I couldn't find the source, and it didn't seem to be loosing enough fluid that I thought that I had a problem. Took it off road, and the thing cracked and it fried the engine. The problem is that coupler is in the 'v' of the block, and to get to it, an intake manifold bank has to be removed. Once the engine overheated, a cylinder liner slipped and it can't be repaired because they are bonded in place through a special process. I'd suggest looking very seriously at the system (could even just be low on fluid, or maybe the thermostat value is getting 'sticky' in it's old age?).

I really enjoyed my Freelander, and had it in some pretty tough situations that most people never experience (ruts, mud, sand etc). I even out climbed a D90 on an icy climb in a winter run once (although, I have to admit, he forgot to lock his center diff which he didn't figure out for about another hour after being pulled up to the top). Never had any problems w/ the tran until my wife came home from the grocery store where a pinion seal failed leaking fluid over the floor of the garage (but it was still under warranty).

Did end up selling it however w/ 107K on it, new engine and new drive shafts (think that the 275/r16 tires on put a lot of extra stress on the shafts in the front). Loved every minute of tho'...

well LR dealers don't want anything to do with these vehicles. many are not even offering them as used vehicles, because of their lust for flatbed tow trucks.
where you will find them is on the auction lots for little more than a used Dodge Stratus.
