I might be in for Caney Fork. However I am kinda set on Uwharrie. Caney Fork would be a lot cheaper. I can count on hurting the Hunter up there, I think I could manage pretty good at Uwharrie. Caney Fork would be a lot cheaper than Uwharrie.

I'm not saying that I'm not going to try to go to Uwharrie but who knows? I did just drop a ass load of cash in my truck and I'm having to tip toe around my wife still! lol

To be totally honest I want to go to URE to meet some folks, but as far a wheelin' I'd much rather go to Caney. I'm not much into the crowds or "guided" trail rides (not that there is anything wrong with that). I'm for getting more return for my $$$ and am leaning toward doing a Caney run. Gas is so damned expensive these days and the fact that some of us are in WNC with good wheelin' HERE, I logically and economically have to say that wheeelin' up here locally is what I'm leaning toward. This is in no way is a dis to URE. I want to go and may still do it but there ARE other options.

Cheers,

Mike

Hey Mike,

I totally agree with out about Caney being a nicer place to wheel. I just wish it was closer so I could make more trips out there.

But I did want to say that you don't have to go on guided rides at URE. Uwharrie is a public trail system and thus you can go out any time you want. We have never been on any guided runs. I think MAR will be the only place with mandatory guided trail rides. Uwharrie can get pretty crowded at times though.

That being said it would be good to see you guys again but if not I'm sure I'll make it out to Caney again some time.

I'd like to step in and discuss "Guided Trail Rides" at URE. We offer 2 guided trail rides on Saturday morning. There is an easy ride and a moderate ride. No one is by any means obligated to go on a guided trail ride. We offer this for the people who may be unfamiliar with the trail network or just want to know that there is a set route intended for the day. As Buddy mentioned, this is an open trail system and anybody is free to do what they want. On expenses; You will not find a more inexpensive formal Land Rover event anywhere in the country than we offer for the Uwharrie Rover Expedition. If you are a paid member to the Old North State, admission is FREE. If you are not a member admission is $25. BTW, that's also the price of membership ;)

I know that fuel prices are ridiculous these days, believe me, I'm coming from East Tennessee to make it and it will hurt my pocket book. But I wouldn't miss it for anything.

Hope to see those who have not been there before there, and to see those who have come to support us in the past come again!

Good points Steven.

Also, if you do decide to have an event in Caney that same weekend, please let me know the details, and when I send out our next note out to the membership, we will publish the details for you.

Let me add that while we were sitting around the campfire, there was mention of the possibility that there may be some folks in WNC wanting to form their own club. While no one needs my permission, please do so! I have long been a proponent of "the more the merrier!" We at the Old North State are not a one size fits all organization and any thing we can do to help get something new going, ask and we will certainly try to accommodate.

A long time back we tried to be a one size fits all organization and it caused a lot of problems in the end. From personalities, to politics, to the types of off roading the group should do there was a lot of tension. When we restarted the Old North State, we wanted to make sure that we never found ourselves in that position again. So, from that experience, we decided that if there were only two of us with Old North State stickers in the window, and we liked each other and the flavor of the event, then that would be good enough! And we would make sure we welcome any other organizations that want to start up and do things their own way.

So, whether it is a new club in the making, or an alternate event (while we do hope people would respect the potential conflict that could be caused by hosting events on the same weekend), let us know how we can help!!

Thanks,

Dan

I just want to throw in my two cents on this also. It will be worth every penny of the price in gas to go to URE, with all the other Rovers and great people that are at the event, over going to Caney Fork. What ever you decied have fun but hopefully everyone will be able to come to URE.

I agree, having to drive out there from Raleigh when Uwharrie is only 2.0 hours away is a bit of a drag.

We have talked about having an event in Caney, but with the amount of work it takes to execute a paid event on Uwharrie, what with requiring special use permits and all, to put that amount of effort in to the State and Federal property that make up the trails in the Caney fork area and it being such a primitive location that it doesn't cater well to supporting families, and trying to respect that many of the locals probably would not like to see 50+ vehicles descending on the area, we decided it wasn't the best place for our annual event.

With Uwharrie being in the center of NC, while it doesn't have somethings that Caney has, it also has many things Caney does not.

Well spoken. I like WNC wheeling a lot and Caney Fork is better suited to smaller groups. Uwharrie is fun I have only been once but am looking forward to hopefully making it to URE. As for a WNC Rover group, Id join.

OK I'm going to add my two cents on the matter. I think an appropriate way to handle this would be to plan a Caney Fork trip on a weekend that does not conflict with the URE event. I know from the limited amount of time I spent around the campfire that a considerable amount of time and energy has gone into the planning of the URE expedition. It would be ashame to plan a casual Caney Fork trip that could possibly affect the turnout of URE. I hope to make it to URE this year. I'm looking foward to meeting new people and having a new trail experience. I think a CF trip is a great idea for those who cannot make the URE expedition, just maybe on a different date. My comment earlier about "Brandon forming a coup" was only a joke and I did not mean to offend anyone, or stir the pot. I have enjoyed the few Old North State rides that I have been on and I'm positive that URE will be a great experience for anyone that can attend.

All that I'm try to to do with this post is give a few of us that may be unable to make the URE event some thing to do that weekend I'm not trying to step on anyones toes or anything and on top of that it fall's around the time of the month that we plane a trip anyway!
