Funny story about a Land Cruiser club and Caney Fork.
Last spring, several of us were trying to map a route from Asheville to Caney staying on gravel or fire road. We got stopped by a primary route that had been permanently closed by the fire service so we jumped on the hard top and headed over to Caney and on to the bald. At the bottom of Caney, we bump in to a LC club. Of course, all is make nice. On the way up, we hear them on the radio, and for the rest of the trip to the top, and after we hear them talking trash about the Rovers and how they were going to beat us to the top and grab the campground.
We went up the left fork, and they tried to squeeze a vehicle in front of us by crossing where the bridge is washed out. No joy for them we got there first. So they shoot the right fork, chattering like a bunch of Magpies the whole way about the speed they were making, and the fierce driving they were doing, and there was no way the rovers could beat them to the top because every body knows the trail to the left is washed out and more technical.
As they turn up the hill, they are congratulating themselves on their vehicle and driving abilities only to make the final 50 meters to find the rovers are already on top of the hill, OC already has his vehicle jacked up and has pulled the CV to see if the noise he heard was there, we were well on our way to finishing our camp set up, and what not.
Again, pleasantries are exchanged, and they drive off looking for another camp site to use, talking trash on the radio with the main party still coming up the hill about how inhospitable those rover guys were, that we gave them the cold shoulder, etc.. About this time I am a little fed up with the whole thing so I grab the FRS and say, "You all do know we can hear you, don't you?"
Silence, then a soft, "no we didn't." I mention that we have been listening to them all the way up the mountain, and even though there had been some unkind things said, they could certainly share the bald with us, all they had to do was ask. They responded that they didn't think there was enough room, for every one, but thanks.
I think the funniest is part was I was last in the group on the way up the hill in the series, and we didn't push at all, just a normal driving pace up the hill for a nearly 50 year old vehicle.
