Be sure to put them under the right differential, so if the jack does give away, all the load will fall on the jack stands

How about putting the load on the jack stands so you don't have to worry about a what if with a jack.

If I'm getting underneath the vehicle, I jack the truck up, put the jack stands under the axle or frame then drop the jack. I then shake the vehicle side to side to make sure that the truck is steady. I then raise the jack up again so its right underneath the axle so if the worst happens I might have a chance.

I just try to slide under there without jacks or jack stands when possible. Oil changes, diff fluid, t-case fluid, grease - I do all that without lifting the truck.

Sad, probably a freak thing. Can't imagine that.

X2 on going under without lifting. Even my driveshaft greasing is done with the pass tire about and inch off ground, stand under axle, jack on frame for extra but it isn't load bearing.

I almost learned this lesson the hard way. A couple years ago I was under the truck with it on jack stands and I had to run to the store for a small part. I have an asphalt driveway. When I came back from the store the disco was on the ground. The jack stands had sunk into the soft asphalt under the summer sun and the truck fell off them. Makes me realyl nervous working under jack stands. I've taken to using wood blocks under them to keep that crap from happening again.

I've also had a motorcycle fall over when the kickstand went through soft asphalt. My next house is going to have a concrete driveway.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Wonder if he was a member here or on LRO. (I'm sure everyone with more than one Rover needs a support group).

My prayers go out to his family.

If my truck has the tires off, I put the tires under the truck, even with jack stands.

I feel bad for the guy. Sounds like he had things in order, but probably decided to take a shot dive under the truck to get something in a hurry. BTDT.

FWIW, FYI... In Russia, people usually throw a tire taken off the vehicle under the rocker panel or elsewhere, just in case the vehicle slides off the jack. After so many years stateside, I still haven't completely kicked off this habit.
Edit - just read what az_max wrote.

I remember my dad working on our Ford station wagon as a kid and I asked him why he out a concrete block (kentucky jackstand) under it. He told me "so that if it falls of the jack I will just get hurt really bad but not die" I have internalized that and either use jack stands or blocks whenever I am under a car.

Cinder blocks (commonly called concrete blocks but in reality entirely different) aren't safe. They are likely to crumble on impact and people typically use them on their side (which is the weakest way to use them) rather than upright. Not that they are safe even when used "right".

In addition to jack stands don't forget the wheel chocks.

Cinder blocks in KY are usuallY pored solid with remnants of rebar from when the outhouse got hit by a drunk uncle in a 2wd blazer.

I knew him. For those in c'ville it was the truck always up near C'ville tire on west main st near where he worked. He was always in and out of Ben's shop.
